Religion as a Vector of Political and Ideological Penetration in Guatemala.
After World War II and more particularly since the late sixties, conservative, fundamentalist sects have exerted a growing influence in Latin America. With the financial and doctrinal backing of individualism American neo-conservatives, they convey the United States business ideology of and materialism. Guatemala is a case in point. No longer able to use the Catholic Church or the « liberal » Protestant churches as levers of influence in Guatemala, conservatives now rely on the fundamentalist sects to combat the « theology of liberation » as well as break up class solidarity, destroy traditional mores and instil instead a North-American individualistic ideology.
