Staging a Frame-up : John Earth's LETTERS or the Traps of Intertextuality.
The discomposure of the reader is manifestly the aim of a good deal of recent fiction. This article shows how this is achieved in LETTERS through the external and internal functioning of intertextuality. Barth places the notion of « frame » (both as limit or supporting structure, and as frame-up) at the heart of his fiction which deconstructs literary conventions while integrating its own criticism and making any synthetic reading ultimately impossible.
