L'opposition qui se développa au cours des années 1880 entre les deux organisations ouvrières, les Knights of Labor et l'American Federation of Labor (AFL) est une histoire bien connue. Cependant ce conflit, qui se termina par la suprématie de l'AFL, fut loin d'être permanent et unanimement partagé. Cet article analyse au contraire les relations de coexistence et de complémentarité entre les deux organisations dont la solidarité explique le grand mouvement des années 1886-87. Par ailleurs, l'article met en lumière l'importance de l'organisation par métier au sein des Knights, élément structurel qui éclaire l'une des sources du conflit entre les deux organisations par le fait que les Knights, comme l'AFL, regroupaient en réalité une majorité d'ouvriers qualifiés. La force du trade-unioniste fut alors à la fois la source du dynamisme exceptionnel de l'Ordre des Knights of Labor et la cause de son déclin. Source : Éditeur (via Persée) |

The Order of the Knights of Labor and Trade-Unionism, Structure and Relations of the Two Forms of Organization.
The conflict that developped in the 1880's between the Knights of Labor and the American Federation of Labor (AFL) is well known in American labor history. However this hostility — that eventually led to the AFL's supremacy — was neither permanent nor shared by all sections, members or leaders of the two federations. This paper focuses on the relationship of coexistence and cooperation between the Knights and the AFL that explains the solidarity revealed by the « great upheaval » of 1886-87. Furthermore this paper emphasizes the importance of the organization by trade within the Knights of Labor, a structural element that sheds light on one of the sources of the conflict since, like the AFL, the Knights also organized a majority of skilled workers.
