Résumé In the perspective of the evolution of the American middle class this study of women in the workforce stresses two major points : 1. For a majority of American households nowadays, middle class status can no longer be claimed when only the husband works. The rise in average household income in the 1980s can only be accounted for by the increasing participation of wives in the workforce. 2. Inequalities are on the rise within the female population. The gap between highly qualified women holding top-notch jobs and the — increasingly female — underclass is widening.
