Résumé anglais The United States is characterized by a political culture which is strongly linked to the notion of territory. Hence, the principle of spatial segregation on an ethnic or social basis. However the US also includes unincorporated areas which today give rise to serious problems on the political level as well as on the level of the management of large metropolitan areas. The purpose of this article is to trace the genesis of incorporation.
