Résumé anglais |
This paper discusses problems of interpretation encountered when reading Second View : the Rephotographic Survey Project (1984). The book is presented as the report of a project the aim of which was to « rephotograph » the West as photographed by 19th-century Federal Survey photographers (especially O'Sullivan, and Jackson). A study of landscape change ? An archaeology of photographic pioneers ? Conceptual art ? Post-modern rediscovery of the American West ? These various interpretations, amply illustrated by the author/rephotographers' comments and photo pairs, seem to revolve around a primarily methodological concern : identifying and recovering the vantage points of the original photographs.
