The Confidence-Man : His Masquerade as Anti-Emersonian Literary Form
Critics have long acknowledged the presence of a satiric portrait of Emerson in CM. We would argue, however, that the force and reach of Melville's critique of Emerson may be best measured in terms of the novel's form rather than its content. After a brief sketch of the evolution of Melville's attitude towards Emerson and an outline of the structural peculiarities of the work, we give an analysis of the ways in which the narrative form of CM constitutes a sweeping attack on the Emersonian vision. In opposition to the unity, order, and transparency of the universe as seen by Emerson's imperial subject, Melville shows, through the distorting glass of the novel's form, a world that is essentially impenetrable and fragmented.
