Résumé anglais |
American protestant « fundamentalism » as defined by the « Five Points » adopted by substantial minorities in various denominations, failed in its early 1920s efforts to conciliate public opinion and achieve the institutional control of the mainline Churches. Hence a switch to field-work, at times under flamboyant and contradictory leadership. For want of reliable statistical data, the growth and extent of the new trends can hardly be assessed ; on the other hand, the qualitative changes are obvious and point to the impregnation of an initially intellectual movement by recurrent themes of populist culture.
