Résumé anglais The history of the flag shows that « Old Glory » was not readily adopted in America as the symbol of the country, nor did the government take speedy measures to regulate its shape and proportions. In fact, it took 135 years for this after the initial resolution by Congress in 1777. When burned or defaced by protesters, the Supreme Court has seldom protected it in its decisions. Yet the Star-Spangled Banner is ever-present in American life. In view of this, we might ask ourselves just what its place is in the lives of Americans.
