Résumé anglais This paper describes the official U.S. reactions first in the United States, then in Latin America, to the desecration of the American flag. A crime for some, a simple form of expression for others, the issue has given rise to heated debates in the United States. In Latin America, defiling the Stars and Stripes is just another aspect of endemic anti-Americanism, and Washington very rarely responds except when important political interests are at stake. Only twice did the insult — though purely symbolical — to the U.S. flag lead to severe conflicts : with Mexico in 1914, and with Panama in 1964.
