Likened to the Bible and the Cross, Old Glory has bred a national cult verging on iconolatry, blurring the limits between civil religion and its metaphysical model. The national icon is here seen in the light of religious icons — its occulted sources — , and of the painter of Flags. The icon's function, its place in Johns' works, questions of pictorial/political representation, converge to show that it is the true American Veronica/Vera Icona, the Nation's u-topian body made present.
