Taking his stand on McLuhan's now familiar idea that « the medium is the message », the author, a plastic arts researcher, argues that taking the medium or support into account is indeed essential when one ponders over the meaning effects produced by this kind of message (which one might describe as « displaced »). For instance : what actually becomes of the national flag (here the Star-Spangled Banner) when, lowered to the status of a poster, it falls prey to all manner of manipulation ?
