Résumé anglais As Frank Kermode put it in The Sense of an Ending, « crisis, however facile the conception, is inescapably a central element in our endeavours towards making sense of our world ». Because of the emphasis on the subject of origins and causes in W. Gaddis's work, questioning the notion of critical moment in relation to the opening page of each novel appears as a way to reexamine the complexity of Gaddis's fictional world. From a survey of the various critical situations at the start, we will move onto a characterization of the beginning as an impossible moment which challenges the reader's desire to enter the « house of fiction ».
