When Paine returned to the United States in 1802, the Federalists launched an effective press campaign against him, denouncing him as irreligious and depraved. Paine's deism was the ostensible grounds for their attack, but the real target was Jefferson. Paine was undoubtedly ostracized as a result of the campaign.
