William Austin's popular short story "Peter Rugg, the Missing Man" first published in the New England Galaxy of Boston, intermingles history and fiction and can be deciphered as a negative parable of the historic role of national Bostonian figure Paul Revere in the years preceding American Revolution. His wanderings around Boston and Concord parallel Revere 's midnight ride and fictionalize the brewing storm on the eve of open conflict. As a tragic anti-hero, Rugg dramatizes the impossibility to by-pass American history and to ignore the radical changes brought up by Independence. Source : Éditeur (via Persée) |
