Résumé anglais This comparative study of Willa Cather and Ellen Glasgow's fictions focuses on the way these writers structure space in language through their use of figures of speech, images and narrative strategy. Three definitions of space are considered : referential space, "figurai" space or that of the sentence, with its syntactic structure, and representational space, conveyed through the descriptive images. All three combine to allow a creative drive to expand and to create a space of one's own in language.
