L'urbanisation dans l'Ouest ivoirien est le fait de l'autorité publique dont les nombreuses initiatives (ARSO, Plans quinquennaux, Communalisation, FIAU, etc.) ont permis à cette partie du territoire national de se doter d'un éventail de petites villes. Si l'interventionnisme étatique a eu des effets de surdimensionnement des principales villes régionales, il n'en a pas moins été un facteur de paupérisation des populations citadines. Cette situation procède d'une vision du développement urbain en termes d'infrastructures non productives. Le projet BAD-Ouest (Banque Africaine de Développement) en inversant cette pratique grâce à la dynamisation des campagnes, constitue un réel atout pour l'amélioration de la condition citadine dans la Région des Montagnes, à la condition de cerner certains paramètres de sa mise en œuvre. Urbanization and Poverty : Aspects of the Population Conditions in Mountainous Region, Ivory Coast. Urbanization in the western parts of Côte-d'Ivoire has been carried out by public authorities whose various efforts (ARSO ; Five year plans ; Communalization ; FIAU, etc.) have enabled this part of the national territory to found a series of small towns. If the endeavors of the State have had the effect of bloating the size of the main regional centers, they have also been a factor in creating poverty among their citizens. This situation resulted from a program of urban development that concentrated on the construction of non-productive urban facilities. The pro¬ ject BAD-Ouest (African Bank for Development), by counteracting this practice thanks to the dynamism of the countrysides, constitutes a real plus factor for improving the living conditions of the populations living in the moutainous region, on the condition that the planners carefully control the various aspects of the manner in which the improvement is carried out.
