L'archive manuscrite (celle, par exemple, des archives judiciaires du XVIIIe siècle) pour l'historien n'est ni un reflet ni une preuve. Elle est le moyen qu'il se donne pour communiquer avec le passé. L'archive « manque » toujours, même abondante. Utiliser l'archive c'est traduire ce manque en question et faire du sens avec elle. L'archive est texte parce qu'elle trouve un destinataire qui crée une nouvelle élaboration d'elle. Ainsi, pour ce langage qui capte les mots d'autrui et d'autrefois, les sujets de l'histoire se constituent et, en un même mouvement, c'est nous-mêmes qui sommes ressaisis en sujets de l'histoire. The manuscript archive (as for example the legal archives of the 18th century) is for an historian neither a reflection nor a proof. It is a means that lends itself to communication with the past. The archive « lacks » always, often abundantly. Using the archive is a matter of translating this gap and making sense of it. The archive is a text because it can find a recipient who creates a new elaboration of it. Thus, this language that harnesses both the words of others and of the past is subject to a history of its constitution and even of reorientation as we reconstruct the subjects of history.
