Depuis la période de l'entre-deux-guerres, les Etats-Unis ont dans un premier temps conquis leur indépendance vis-à-vis des Britanniques. Vint avec le second conflit le temps d'une ambition renouvelée, appuyée par l'Etat et soucieuse d'universalité dans les solutions techniques adoptées. Sur la base très libérale du « free flow of information » se construisit un véritable empire assis sur le tryptique : réseaux, matériel, industrie des programmes. Cette hégémonie allait être mise en cause dès les années 70, où, tout en restant leader du marché mondial des communications, les Etats-Unis devaient s'adapter tant aux revendications du tiers-monde qu'à l'émergence économique de l'Europe dans ce domaine autrefois protégé. Since the inter-war period, the United States obtained their indépendance from the British. The second conflict introduced a period of renewed ambition, backed by the state, and concerned about the universality of the technical solutions applied. On the very liberal base of the « free flow of information » was built an empire on the tryptic networks, material, program industry. This hegemony was going to be doubted about as from the seventies, where while staying at the head of the communications market the United States had to adapt to the claims of the third world as well as to those of the economic emergence of Europe into this long protected area.
