Résumé anglais |
The Ellen Mac Arthur Foundation's study “Unlocking a reuse revolution: scaling returnable packaging”, demonstrates the opportunity of scaling-up return based reuse systems versus single use plastic packaging. The modelling demonstrates that returnable plastic packaging outperforms single use plastic packaging on greenhouse gas emissions, water use, material use and associated waste generation. When scale, collaboration and return rates increase, the related environmental benefits grow-reaching up to 75% reduction in material use, GHG emissions and water use. The modelling reveals that the returnable packaging can compete economically with single use at high levels of scale and collaboration whilst creating local jobs. With expected changes in regulation to fully account for externalities and end of life of packaging, the business case for returnable packaging will become even stronger. A reuse revolution requires a collective effort and close collaboration across industries, governments, and communities is essential for unlocking a reuse revolution.
