Une semaine après sa nomination comme économiste en chef à la Direction générale de la Concurrence de la Commission européenne en juillet 2023, Fiona Scott Morton renonce à son poste en raison de la polémique que suscite son arrivée. Cette dernière est analysée comme un moment d'explicitation des attendus sociaux qu'il faut satisfaire pour occuper un rôle d'économiste dans une administration spécifique et, indissociablement, des tensions qui traversent cette institution. À partir d'une enquête socio-historique sur l'exécutif européen et de matériaux ethnographiques liés à cette controverse, l'article montre comment la réfraction de telles tensions a conduit à la mise en cause des activités de consultante et de la nationalité de l'économiste américaine, conduisant à son éviction. Cette perspective microsociologique articule ainsi temps court et long de la vie d'une institution, pour comprendre comment l'une de ses agents apparaît désajustée dans une configuration sociale particulière. One week after she was appointed chief economist at the European Commission's DG Competition in July 2023, Fiona Scott Morton resigned due to the controversy her appointment generated. This controversy is analysed as a moment of clarification of the social expectations that must be met in order to occupy the role of an economist in a specific administration and, inseparably, of the tensions that run through this institution. Based on a socio-historical study of the European executive and ethnographic materials specific to this controversy, the article shows how the refraction of such tensions led to the problematisation of two social properties of the American economist (her consulting activities and her nationality) and led to her ouster. This micro-sociological perspective thus links the short and long life of an institution to describe how one of its agents appears out of tune in a particular social configuration.
