La norme est inhérente à la perspective, pour l'animal humain, d'accéder à son humanité et de s'y déployer. Longtemps imputée à un ordre d'origine surnaturelle qui en sacralisait les préceptes et dont se prévalaient les systèmes de pouvoir auxquels il revenait d'en être à la fois le gardien et le garant, elle a connu maintes évolutions au fil de l'Histoire. Si, en lieu et place de sa référence au divin, un idéal d'humanité est dans un premier temps devenu l'horizon du « devoir être » qu'elle désignait, l'empire que l'idéologie libérale a fini par exercer sur la marche du monde semble avoir entraîné depuis peu un dépérissement inquiétant du rapport liant les êtres humains à la norme. For the “human animal”, the norm plays a key role in accessing humanity and flourishing within it. Long attributed to a supernatural order, the norm and its precepts were viewed as sacred. They were utilised by systems of power that, therefore, needed to act as both the guardians and guarantors of the norm. Nevertheless, the norm has undergone many a shift over the course of history. The norm was originally characterised by a divine order. The latter was initially replaced by an ideal vision of humanity, which thus defined the “life duty” that the norm once invoked. More recently, liberal ideologies and their influence on world affairs seem to have led to a worrying decline in the relationship between human beings and the norm.
