En France, deux ensembles de travaux sur les catégorisations raciales en prison se dégagent, au sein desquels cette question peine à trouver une problématisation convaincante : entre ceux, d'une part, qui privilégient l'entrée par le continuum carcéral pour saisir l'imbrication des logiques d'exclusion sociale et raciale entre la prison et les quartiers populaires ; et ceux, d'autre part, qui interrogent la racialisation au seul prisme des conditions de production des énoncés racistes. En prenant pour objet la manière dont le personnel pénitentiaire désigne et regroupe les détenus au regard d'un lieu de résidence et des fréquentations qui y sont associées, l'article examine les effets imbriqués des processus de racialisation et de territorialisation sur les modalités d'affectation en détention. À partir d'une enquête ethnographique dans deux maisons d'arrêt, il montre comment les catégorisations territoriales visant les jeunes hommes de milieux populaires reproduisent des formes de racialisation et de disqualification des détenus visés par des pratiques ambivalentes de regroupement en unités de détention. La latitude laissée au personnel d'encadrement de l'administration pénitentiaire dans la gestion des affectations apparaît dès lors déterminante. Elle donne lieu, dans les deux établissements de l'enquête, à la constitution de normes d'« équilibrage » dans la composition des unités, révélatrices d'une dynamique pragmatique de racialisation structurant l'ordre carcéral. In France, two areas of works on racial categorization in prisons have emerged, and both have struggled to find a convincing way of addressing the issue: on the one hand, those who focus on the prison continuum in order to understand the interlocking logics of social and racial exclusion between prisons and working-class neighbourhoods; and on the other, those who examine racialisation only through the prism of the conditions under which racist statements are made. By examining the way in which prison staff designate and group inmates in terms of their place of residence and the networks of acquaintances associated with it, the article looks at the intertwined effects of the processes of racialisation and territorialization on the way in which inmates are assigned to prison. Based on an ethnographic survey of two French prisons, it shows how territorial categorization applied to young men from working-class backgrounds reproduces forms of racialization and disqualification of prisoners targeted by practices of cell grouping practices. The latitude given to prison management staff in the assignments therefore appears to be decisive. In the two prisons surveyed, this led to the establishment of “balancing” standards in the composition of units, revealing a pragmatic process of racialisation structuring the prison order.
