C'est une histoire qui remonte à 1695 à Pinsk, près de Minsk, en Biélorussie, avec la naissance puis l'errance sur les routes d'Europe d'un grand esprit de la pensée talmudique encore étudié aujourd'hui, le Chaagath Arié, « Lion rugissant » en hébreu. Il s'agit de la généalogie de mon grand-père, l'historien Marc Bloch, abattu en 1944 par les nazis. Une longue lignée d'esprits brillants et engagés dans leur époque a produit le savant, le citoyen, le combattant, le grand résistant qu'il fut. Du traducteur de Platon et Voltaire en yiddish, Asser Lion, à Gabriel Bloch, fait citoyen français par la Révolution de 1789, puis à son fils Marc Bloch, premier et seul élève juif à l'École normale de Nancy, qui rêvait d'une République universelle, et à son petit-fils Gustave, le père de Marc Bloch, normalien, membre de l'École française de Rome, professeur d'histoire ancienne à la Sorbonne… Un récit nécessaire à une meilleure connaissance de l'historien, qui entrera au Panthéon de la République avec sa femme Simonne le 16 juin 2026. It is a story that dates back to 1695 in Pinsk, near Minsk, Belarus, with the birth and then the wandering on the roads of Europe of a great spirit of talmudic thought still studied today, the Shaagath Arié, "Roaring Lion" in Hebrew. This is the genealogy of my grandfather, the historian Marc Bloch, shot in 1944 by the Nazis. A long line of brilliant minds and committed to their time has produced the scholar, the citizen, the fighter, the great resistant that he was. From the translator of Plato and Voltaire into Yiddish, Asser Lion, to Gabriel Bloch, made a French citizen by the Revolution of 1789, then to his son Marc Bloch, first and only Jewish student at the Ecole normale de Nancy, who dreamed of a universal Republic, and to his grandson Gustave, the father of Marc Bloch, a Normalien, member of the French School of Rome, professor of ancient history at the Sorbonne...
