Reconciling a militant project and the product's economic success
Open-source software “communities” are a hybrid category consisting of militant collectives defending values and production teams developing efficient software. These two types of community are interdependent and inextricably linked, for a project's future depends on the product's success. The early stages of software development are characterized by project-product symbiosis. However, increasing diversification of the contributors creates the need to manage situations in which involvement in appropriating and developing the product put the militant project to the test. This study shows that these mechanisms are usually based, not on logics of eviction and exclusion, but rather on the production of collective judgements that contribute to a distributed socialization.
Online political expression and activism in an authoritarian context
In the popular uprising in Tunisia that led to President Ben Ali's departure on 14 January 2011, Internet was used extensively to broadcast information both nationally and internationally, and to put out calls for mobilization. Its role has however often been analyzed only superficially. In this article, rather than focusing on these critical circumstances, we look back at the history of Tunisians' uses of Internet for protest purposes. This type of use emerged in the late 1990s and grew rapidly thereafter. We break this history down into three main periods corresponding to three configurations characterized by new actors, new technical systems, and new forms of political expression and collective protest action.
      Keyboard mobilization
This article examines the modalities of the constitution of online audiences, with a focus on strategic uses of hypertext links in the framework of online collective action. Hypertext links are seen as mechanisms facilitating the translation of a shared interest in a theme, into a collective activity targeting common goals. This study, drawing its inspiration from the literature on online mobilization and “link studies”, is based on fieldwork in which the methodological approach combines statistical analysis, content analysis and mapping of the Web. It shows that strategic uses of links have a structuring effect on action and are found during the mobilization of a collective, the course of the action itself, and the creation of a public space around an arena.
Domination and critique in online collaborative projects
Participants in online collaborative projects adopt a moral attitude as they strive to eliminate any form of exploitation and domination. In this light, under what conditions can they accept decisions, which, though necessary for sound administration, are restrictive? This article defines legitimate domination in these projects as a form of resistance to critique. In the field of knowledge, the individualizing and charismatic authority of the founders who know the project better than anyone withstands the critique of technocracy, of expertise from above. In the field of justice the collective and procedural authority of administrators who apply the decisions of the community withstands the critique of tyranny, of opaque deliberations and decisions. These critiques can be generalized, thus challenging the social order, but their effectiveness depends on what is known of the participants' identity.
      The libertarian federation against networks
In the sociological literature on the revival of protest since the 1990s, it is generally taken for granted that network organization is associated with anarchistic practices. While this is partially true, our findings on the French anarchistic and trade union movements-advocating direct action show that it needs to be qualified. We have found that many anarchistic militants are closer to the tradition of libertarian federalism than to that of the network. This article fits into the framework of the Sociology of Disputes, as it presents and puts into perspective a militant debate on the notion of networks. The author shows that, contrary to widespread belief, not all the actors of the protest revival equate the network to horizontality and transparency.

      Showing minorities, avoiding ethnicities
More than ten years after French television was denounced for leaving no space for diversity and non-white minorities, we are witnessing a shift. In the quantitative data that was either available or was produced especially for this research, it appears that the question of numbers has almost been resolved, especially in new French fiction. This brings to the fore the question of the meaning of the following finding: the price paid for this greater presence seems to be that the question of ethnicity is swept under the carpet. To demonstrate this, the author examines the ways of taking minorities and ethnicity into account in ‘quality' US fiction, The Wire, and compares them to regular French TV fiction. The contrast between the two is intended not to rank these two types of fiction but to highlight the cultural constraints weighing on French TV fiction.
