This paper retraces the careers of the Indian Alumni who were trained at the London School of Economics in the first half of the twentieth century and who became professional economists. How many were they? What did they study in London? What positions did they hold in the academic or political fields once back in India? Did these mobile go-betweens play a crucial role in making cross-cultural interactions possible? The statistical treatment of the alumni directories and the content analysis of their early works provide some insights into the question of knowledge dissemination.
This article proposes a viewpoint about the Cold War based on East-West cultural transfers and, more specifically, on transnational book circulation. The analysis deals with the book flows from Western to Eastern European countries initiated after the “thaw”. Focused on the actors of this transfer, as well as on their practices and editorial projects, it points out the anti-communist struggle strategies based on transnational circulation of printing and on translation. This approach adds new perspectives about the Cold War going beyond a simple opposition between two political “blocs” that were hermetically sealed and a monolithic system view on Eastern Europe.
From 1945 to 1980, Unesco played an important role in the international and transnational cultural relationships. Unesco's action for the production, the diffusion and the circulation of ideas and knowledge was intense and manyfold. This action was made by many means: creation of institutions, organization of conferences, publication of books, realization of operational field projects. Nevertheless, the realizations did not always correspond to the ambitions: they were often occidentalocentric. As the example of NWICO (new world information and communication order) shows, these circulations of ideas and knowledge often reflected the relations of domination in the world. The East-West major project, as the History of Mankind, did not obtain all the impact that Unesco hoped in the world opinion. In spite of these shortcomings, Unesco contributed in an important way to international circulations of ideas and knowledge in the world.
This analysis of pragmatism's receptions in France at the beginning of the twentieth century proposes several systems of interpretation about the international circulation of ideas. This article attempts to highlight the social and intellectual mechanisms which contribute to the diffusion of foreign intellectual work in French thought but also the obstacles they encountered.
This article aims to analyze how the reception of John Rawls and US theories of justice among French philosophers has been impacted by their previous introduction in francophone philosophy departments in Belgium and Quebec from the start of the 1990s. We thus stress the necessity to distinguish linguistic frontiers and national frontiers in the study of the international circulation of ideas. We first explain why these francophone margins happened to be more open to US political philosophy than the French philosophical field. Then we show how this prior reception within the francophone periphery helped to accelerate the French reception. We study lastly how US theories of justice got politicized through this process, and translated according to the classifications prevailing in the Canadian and Belgian political fields.

    • The Persistence of Anglo-Saxonism in Britain and the origins of Britain's appeasement policy towards Germany - Robert Boyce p. 110-129 accès libre avec résumé en anglais
Since the fourteenth century Britons regarded themselves as Anglo-Saxon people. British historians consistently encouraged this belief in the nineteenth century, which was reinforced by scientific and pseudo-scientific interest in racism. In consequence, Britons were dismayed to find themselves at war in 1914 with their Anglo-Saxon cousins in Germany and allies with the leading Latin and Slav powers. Their determination to avoid a repetition of this situation led to the appeasement of Germany, which continued until at least 1939.
The french "radical" political party, an edge for the center of the political pattern ? Is the decline of the French Radical Party under the Vth Republic due to an adverse electoral system and a tough political situation, or is it due to a more profound failure to formulate a centrist political project ? First, the party proves unable to adapt to the new political system : its week ideological structuration became harmful facing much more gifted allies and opponents. Therefore, the party, by searching his political revival with the conclusion of large electoral agreements much more than with overhauling his political views, loses both its identity and the support of its elected representatives and its militants/activists.

While history has started again in North Africa after decades of stagnation and repression, it may be a suitable time to explore the decline of the historical studies dedicated to this part of the world. During the colonial and post-colonial period, France was the very fertile centre of the writing of both ancient and contemporary history of North Africa. But at the beginning of the 21st century, it is not true. anymore In France, both institutional research and teaching are marginalized. Since the 1980s, French research studies have focused on the Middle East more than on North Africa and History has given way to Political Sciences. On their side, the North African scientific policies strongly weakened the drive of their national research. The synergies between a marginalised French research and a Maghreb research under control are very weak.. In history too the “Arab Spring” must get its breath back.

The Bibliothèque de l'Hôtel de Ville (previously known under the name of Bibliothèque administrative de la Ville de Paris) is a patrimonial and research library, open free to the public, and is also the main documentation centre of the municipal government of Paris. It has succeeded the library that disappeared in the fire of the Hôtel de Ville, May 24th, 1871. The reading room, listed on the historical register, offers one of the best examples of library architecture of the end of the 19th century. The library holds 600 000 printed books, manuscripts, architecture drawings and photographs. The collections, gathered since the origin on a very large basis, are more particularly focused on social sciences, law, contemporary history, and Parisian documentation. They make the library an essential place for researches on the 19th and 20th centuries. One of the most original resources of the library is its foreign collection (about 50 000 volumes), fruits of the international exchanges maintained by the city of Paris from 1870 to 1920 with a great number of local and central governments all over the world. The general catalogue of printed books (monographs and serials) is accessible on line, through the Paris.fr web portal of the City of Paris.
