On 2006, a Nigerian woman was arrested in the northeast of the Italy and she was charged with the offense of “female genital mutilation” in compliance with Italian Law 7/2006 entitled “provisions concerning the prevention and prohibition of the practice of female genital mutilation”. On 2008 in Bari, in the south, a two-monthold Nigerian infant died following severe haemorrhaging caused by a circumcision performed at home by a compatriot. These two episodes, notwithstanding their difference in context and time, could seem very distant from each other, but these cases are connected exactly at the point where they divide. From the official documents the anthropological analysis focuses on the messages that can be defined as “humanitarian moral”. So the legal implications of these events constitute important precedents and if read, from a gender perspective, help us to shed light on what might be called “differentialist neo-sexism”, which implies the perception of the Other corporeality in the so-called host society. Still, following the two stories sheds more light on what the idea the nation state has regarding the body of immigrants, in general the Others, and in particular on “culturally relevant” treatment of the woman under the law.
The Epic Among the Fulbe of Massina
In the oral tradition cultures, every type of speech is a specific expression of language which transmits its real meaning and its efficiency only through the whole range of the parameters commanding its performance. Thus we shall observe in the epic of the Massina Peuls: as far as the textual expression is concerned, the referential dimension of the narrative content and its stylistic and musical layout; on the socio-cultural level, the respective status of the participants: the enunciating “griot” and his audience; as for the performance, the circumstances and the modes of enunciation (rhythm and accompanying music); as for the pragmatics, the rallying function centered on an identity ideology.
    • Njoya's Alphabet : The Sultan of Bamum and French Colonial Reactions to the A ka u ku Script - Kenneth J. Orosz p. 45-66 accès libre avec résumé avec résumé en anglais
Shortly before the turn of the century Sultan Njoya of Bamum developed an independent written script to record the history of his people and provide a secure means of communication for royal affairs. The final version of his script, dubbed A ka u ku, was hailed by German colonial authorities as a symbol of intelligence and Njoya's progressive character. The French initially held equally positive visions of Njoya when they replaced the Germans as Cameroon's new colonial master in the wake of WWI. By the 1920s, however, their regard for Njoya was replaced by a growing antipathy which eventually led to the sultan's arrest and exile to Yaoundé. Since the use of A ka u ku declined in the same period scholars have argued incorrectly for decades that it must have been outlawed by local French authorities as part of their campaign to undermine Njoya and curtail his power. In reality, Njoya's script simply fell victim to inter-war politics and the clear material advantages to those Bamum who acquired literacy in French.
The “Haalpulaarization” or the “Enwordment” of Pulaar Language and Culture in Senegal
This article proposes to explore and analyze the epilinguistic discourses of pulaarophone Senegalese activists. More specifically, it involves clarifying the discursive intrumentalization that Pulaar language provides through diverse homogeneization processes, for social, economic and political purposes. From a methodological point of view, this study fits within the framework of the anthropology of language practices, thus it adopts a multidiciplinary approach.
In researching African realities anthropologists very often have to face the difficulty of the use of some very problematic terms such as “ethnic” (in expressions like “ethnic music”, “ethnic clothing”, etc.), “tribe” and derivatives, or “witchcraft” and “sorcery”. Such terms are still used but the discomfort that many anthropologists feel when using them is undeniable; they are, undoubtedly, “knotty terms”. To what extent can African anthropology do without these terms? What must our attitudes regarding these terms be if we really cannot give them up? These are some of the questions I will be addressing in this article, giving special importance to the troublesome term of “witchcraft”. It is clear that anthropological practice in African societies cannot be separated from general dynamics of alterization processes. As I argue in the article, part of the problem of knotty terms lies in the way we view and treat the Other through determined alterization strategies such as synecdochization, exoticization, undervaluation, overvaluation, misunderstanding and exclusion. The interest in reflecting on the “knotty terms” issue lies in the fact that far beyond their epistemological implications for anthropology, they have an important ideological and therefore social dimension as well.
In early 2012, an international charter plane carrying tourists landed, for the first time, in the Chadian desert. Its arrival was made possible by the political context in Chad and the Sahara more generally, rather than by significant local developments or demands; as a result, tourism in the area remained primarily shaped by national politic interests and power struggles. Meanwhile, local populations showed relatively little interest in these uninvited strangers. This indifference, and the many misunderstandings it led to, mostly based on mutually incompatible notions of wealth, hospitality and solidarity, shows the limits, in this particular context at least, of the idea of development through and for tourism.

“Nobody Undress in Front of Anyone”The public testimony as practice is one of ways for the associations throughout the world to give a face, a visibility to a disease, in other words to contribute to make it a public, concrete and real. In Europe, numerous people use testimonies, as a form of commitment to fight the disease. In Senegal, the testimony has historic, legal and social forms. The analysis of the oral testimonies, made by people living with AIDS in Senegal, reveals an example of local adaptation of a borrowed technique. The study also reports political, economic, cultural, moral obstacles, which give an original character of these testimonies.
