This article describes and discusses the ceramics known in the archaeological literature as “Carmen Phase or Style” (circa 200 -400 AD) that were recovered in our recent research at the sites of Cerro del Gentil y Pampa del Gentil, located in the mid Chincha valley, at the south coast of Peru. The analysis of the pottery and its archaeological contexts provide us with a better understanding of human occupation of these sites mainly related with Nasca Society.
This essay presents the socio-economic characteristics of Portuguese immigrants of Chinese, Japanese and Indian background who lived in Lima around 1613. The supporting documentation used is the Census of Indians produced by the order of the Viceroy of Peru, the Marquis de Montescarlos. The census documents the characteristics of all of the indigenous people living in the city, but gives very little consideration of the historiographical characteristics of Asians who were registered in the census. This article provides historiographical balance on the issue and the context of production of the census. The information recorded in the census of all Asians living in the city is presented in a table based on the following criteria: name, age, occupation, social status, length of residence, place of residence and family composition. This methodology will enable analysis on transpacific routes that would have facilitated the entry of Asians into Lima and the inclusion/social segregation processes that they experienced in the early colonial city. Finally, we offer a brief comparison to the case of New Spain with special consideration of the social status of Asian immigrants based on the occupations they undertook in the City of Kings.
  • Tapuy miri, chiquitos, chiquitanos.
The Bolivian Chiquitano are often identified as inheritors of Jesuit culture, although their name and sociocultural situation changed greatly before and after the missionary period. The term “Chiquitos” evokes a family of ethnic, topographic, linguistic and identity concepts built and transformed since the 16th century. The aim of this essay is to reconstruct both the origin and changes in the naming of the Chiquitano peoples, and the different meanings associated with them. The analytical premise is the central role played by the ethnic relations with other native groups as well as with the White people, and its importance for the definition of the form and content of these groups and their names.
Commemorated in 2014, the Centenary of the First World War represented an opportunity to renew traditional historical studies of the Great War by developing an analysis of the conflict from new spaces and with new questions. From that perspective, this paper studies the mobilization of the German community of Peru during the First World War based on two German-Peruvian publications: La Guerra Gráfica and Germania. In a country that was clearly pro-Allies, an analysis of the representations created by the German community of Peru is an invitation to interrogate the notions of mobilization and of the culture of war during a conflict that was both close and distant at the same time for these European migrants.
