By realising “generic images” or “composite portraits” (images obtained by superimposing several pictures of the same individual or of different individuals belonging to the same family or group) Francis Galton was trying to capture the image of an abstract entity: a type, a statistical average, the “essence” of an individual or the “typical” character of a group. He was trying to eliminate subjectivity from what is usually considered characteristically subjective: the formation of mental images, of abstract concepts. After a few months he had to admit that the idea that certain physical traits could be related to a “type” was wrong (the composite of an “average criminal” is very much the same as the composite of an “average poor person”) and he realized that the law of errors based on an arithmetic average, though useful for statisticians trying to describe the phenomena of life and society, could lead in many cases to “absurdities when the phenomena show significant deviations from normality”. Galton didn't develop this intuition further but, as was often the case for him, he paved the way for going beyond his own theories.
In a paper published in 1952, shortly after the publication of Arrow's celebrated impossibility result, the French mathematician Georges-Théodule Guilbaud has obtained a dictatorship result for the logical problem of aggregation, thus anticipating the literature on abstract aggregation theory and judgment aggregation. We reconstruct the proof of Guilbaud's theorem, which is also of technical interest, because it can be seen as the first use of ultrafilters in social choice theory.
The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the relevance of a new point of view on the formal study of Natural Language. Because Ludics allows to handle interaction and proposes a way to decompose interaction into its primitive elements, and since interaction seems to us crucial to treat language phenomena, the ludical approach seems convenient to renew this study. Such a study was initiated within the ANR project « Prélude » which aimed at transposing concepts of Ludics and at using them as new tools in various domains of Language study. Several tracks have been explored, with promising results, like the study of dialogues, argumentation and fallacies, pragmatics (speech acts), [Fleury, Tronçon, à paraître ; Livet, à paraître], and semantics (a new approach of logical forms) [Lecomte, Quatrini, 2009]. We propose in this article an approach of the meaning of utterrances based on a ludical concepts.
Canonical correlation analysis is a statistical method proposed by Hotelling in 1936, best known for its theoretical qualities, since it encompasses many other statistical methods. It allows the linear relationships between two sets of variables measured on the same individuals to be described. Several generalizations of this method, grouped under the name Generalized Canonical Analysis, have been proposed in the literature to study jointly the linear relationships existing between several groups of variables measured on the same individuals. In this article, after describing linear canonical analysis and its generalizations, we compare three methods of generalized canonical analysis: the Sumcor method, the Ssqcor method and the Carroll method. To illustrate the application of these methods we start with a psychosocial questionnaire developed in the theory of social representations and which concerns the study of disobedience of traffic rules among young drivers. The results observed in this study show that the method of canonical correlation analysis and its generalizations are appropriate statistical tools for describing and analyzing the data collected in the field of social sciences. Furthermore in the study of social representations this approach allows us to illustrate through the “patterns” of answers, the internal structuring of the legitimate transgressions
