Today, there are around 250 dairy cooperatives in the mountain region, mostly in the Jura Mountains. The reason for their survival is their focus on producing quality cheeses protected by an AOC (controlled designation of origin) but also by the actions of the men who have managed this sector. The text underscores the geographical and functional diversity of the movement and examines the notion of mountain cooperatives.

The first traces of breeders associated for merging together their milks to make marketable cheese (cooked pressed cheese) appear in the late Middle Ages (13th century). This entrepreneurial model really started to spread in the seventeenth century. But it was not before the 1880s that the whole production of Gruyère de Comté was organized. Co-operators created in the 1970s a “local production system” (système productif localisé), combining dairy farmers monitoring production through co-operatives, manufacturers and traders. Farmers, cheese co-operatives, traditional companies and businesses built a set of charters (Appellation d'Origine Protégée Comté, “campaign plans”, “contracts”). They developed a production system controlled by the stockbreeders in a defined territory which is one of the major components of this cheese-making industry. The mountain, defined as a geographic space, played an essential role in this long-lasting experience. The fruitière, as socio-economic form, emerged from the meeting between mountain (a geography), communities (people and their social rules) and feudalism (kind of power).

In an economy of increased globalization and trade, wine holds a privileged place. The wine cooperative system in vineyards in mountain regions, such as in Banyuls-sur-Mer, France and the Val di Cembra, Italy, offers a privileged context for studying the opportunities for individual action that affect precarious socio-economic balances. To understand, and sometimes predict, changes in the socio-economics and landscapes of a region due to cooperatives, we have used a multi-agent system (MAS) to model the behavior of the actors involved in wine production in a cooperative. This model analyses cooperative systems' impact on socio-economic factors (income inequality and the rate of business failure) and landscapes (percentage of total land as vineyards, particularly in steep areas) of the regions considered. The findings show that cooperatives play a role of socio-economic and landscape stabilizer in these regions.

One third of Slovakia is covered by mountain range where cooperatives are the main agricultural actors. These collective farms were created within the frame of the former administered economy and have survived its break up. The specific temporality of the collectivization in mountain and the structure of local communities are important factors in the stages of change. The paper aims at estimating the effects of the mountain context in the restructuring of the cooperatives and gives a typology of the current forms of cooperatives in mountain areas.

  • Cooperative Movements in the Western Highlands of Cameroon - Albert Jiotsa, Timothy Musima Okia, Henri Yambene accès libre avec résumé avec résumé en anglais
Cooperative societies in the Western Highlands (West and North West regions) of Cameroon is an age old institution which started with the arrival of the European colonialists towards the end of the nineteenth century. The fertile soils of this region favors agricultural activities thereby giving rise to many cooperatives in the region. The cooperative societies that have been developed in these areas are the type found in sub Saharan Africa which has stood the test of time more than half a century whereby the other cooperatives elsewhere in the same country have failed. The question this article is about to provide answers is to what has made these cooperatives in the Western Highlands of Cameroon able to stand the test of time when others are quitting the scene. To come out with this scientific article we have implored the active participatory research methodology. The analysis shows that these cooperatives since their creation have been imploring certain innovative measures to make them adapt to the many constraints in their sector.
