The position of the Italian Government on the occasion of the birth of the State of Israel and the conflict that ensued was inspired by the need to sustain the line held by Italy's allies in that period, that is to say the principal countries of Western Europe and the United States. The Rome government recognized the new State nine months after its creation, but in the years that followed it tried to maintain cordial relations with all countries in the Near and Middle East.
During the second half of the 1950s, Italy was trying to break the limits imposed by its defeat in the Second World War and to rebuild its foreign policy in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern areas. This region was a traditional point of interest for Italian diplomacy: throughout past centuries the Peninsula had been considered an ideal bridge between Europe and the Arab countries. The 1956 Suez crisis was an important test to measure the power of Italian diplomacy. On this occasion Nasser was prone to consider Italy a useful intermediary in his contact with the Western Powers. The main actors in Italian foreign policy, however, had different opinions as to the level of independence the Italian Government could maintain vis-a-vis the Atlantic Powers. The lack of concerted action compromised the role of Italian diplomacy.
The Italian Government gave its hypocritical support to the French thesis, that the Algerian War was a domestic matter, because it feared the effects of a different policy. Its fears increased throughout the war. Up until March 1957, Italy supported France in Algeria because it feared that otherwise it would sabotage the process of European integration. In the following months, and up until May 1958, Italy feared that France, if abandoned by its allies, could either turn to the left or evolve into an authoritarian regime, to the detriment of its Western relations. With the return of General de Gaulle, Italy considered that France could opt for a liberal solution for Algeria only if it obtained satisfaction, in terms of prestige and solidarity, on the European and Atlantic levels.
The purpose of this paper is to assess the Italian reactions to the escalation of the Vietnam War, as well as the impact of the war on US-Italian relations, on Italian foreign policy, and on the evolution of Italian domestic politics. The essay first looks at how the war in Vietnam became an issue in Italy's domestic politics, and describes the coincidence between the escalation and the growing internal discontent with the experiment of the Center-Left. In the following section, the essay shows how the Italian preoccupations about the war were interrelated to a number of other foreign policy concerns, which seriously troubled the Italian foreign policy-making elite in the second half of the 1960's. All these domestic and international anxieties spurred a series of Italian attempts to bring about a negotiated settlement of the conflict, from the botched trip to Hanoi of Florence Mayor Giorgio La Pira to the tangled webs of Marigold and Killy, which are explored in the last section of the paper.
On 30 June 1960, the Congo gained independence. The fear that the transition was too rash soon proved to be sound. This article analyses the role played by Italy during a crisis that, within a short time, involved all the relevant political actors of the time. At the beginning of the Sixties, the Congo was not only a place where different conceptions of independence were at stake ; it very quickly became a testing ground for reviewing historical allegiances and searching for possible new dynamics. Domestic policy constraints, foreign ambitions and economic interests marked the limits of the action that Italy was able to accomplish by itself, and it was by supporting the initiatives of the United Nations that Italy forged the moderate dynamism that was to become its distinctive trait.
The outbreak of the Yom Kippur War and the oil crisis that followed were among the main challenges facing Italian diplomacy during the 1970s. Economic concerns related to energy dependence, historical relations with the Arab world, and domestic policy priorities all led the country to adopt a point of view that partly clashed with that of its allies, including the United States. The article outlines the Italian attitude to the crisis, from the activities in the European Community framework to the unilateral initiatives toward the Arab countries, by an analysis of documents from the private archives of Aldo Moro, the Italian Foreign Minister and Italy's key foreign-policy player during that period.
At the outbreak of the Falklands War between the United Kingdom and Argentina, in the spring of 1982, the government led by Giovanni Spadolini supported the eec embargo against the imports from the South American country that had provoked the crisis. Due to the strong economic interests and the important Italian presence in Argentina, however, the majority of Italy's political parties forced the government to abandon the embargo, resulting in a break with its European partners. The break was quickly repaired, thanks to the British victory and the goodwill of all the countries involved, but it highlighted the difficulties for the Italian political milieu in elaborating a coherent foreign policy on controversial questions involving interests that were hard to reconcile.

Each of these seven famous affairs took place in the first months of the Spanish Civil War. The subjects have their similarities and their differences, some falling victim to the Republicans, others to the Nationalists. Unamuno and Marañón, the greatest philosopher and the greatest physician that Spain produced in the 20th century, both in contradiction with themselves. The Count of Romanones, co-founder of the Republic, who kept apart from the war. José Antonio Primo de Rivera, founder of the Falange but an opponent of Franco's cause. Francisco Largo Calvo, son of Prime Minister Largo Caballero, taken hostage but surviving. And Niceto Alcalá Zamora, President of the Republic, father of a family politically and tragically divided, who was to die in Argentina and in poverty.
