This article explores systematically an under-studied aspect of field theory: through the case-study of Algerian writers, it aims at confirming the validity of the notion of transnational (and multilingual) field. The main criteria adopted here is the national and international belief in the existence of “Algerian literature”: the spontaneous citations of individual writers during the interviews make it possible to outline a national literary field, hierarchized and segmented, that nonetheless operates beyond territorial and linguistic borders. A multiple correspondence analysis confirms this observation and introduces a distinction between two forms of literary capital - national and international – that partially overlap with the opposition between the francophone and arabophone subfields. The article then discusses the model proposed by Pascale Casanova, which associates international pole and autonomy on the one hand, and national pole and heteronomy on the other. By focusing on the period that saw the emergence of national literatures, she neglects the postcolonial period during which spaces of autonomy managed to emerge at the national level. The period of the civil war, in the 1990s, significantly diminished the autonomy of the field, including at the international level, as it becomes almost “nationalized”: not only did it become subservient to national political objectives, but literature became increasingly subjected to economic heteronomy, which is another aspect neglected by Casanova. Nonetheless, this transnational space remained relatively autonomous – i.e. a transnational field – to the extent that it refracted the civil war through the lens of this transnational dimension.
This article focuses on the transnational debates and circulations of neo-Confucian intellectuals. Starting in the 1990s, these men and women born in Asia but employed in North American universities have sought to revive the ancient Confucian tradition in order to turn it into a philosophy in tune with political and intellectual modernity. In order to do so, they moved closer to Asian universities and regimes eager to take advantage of their expertise and to promote an endogenous version of their own modernity, at a time when several societies and economies of the region were aligning themselves with the West. Starting with a debate on the relationship between human rights and Confucianism, the article seeks to understand how this back-and-forth between Asia and the West has structured the positions of neo-Confucian intellectuals. In particular, it shows how these different academic and political constraints have structured the transnational debate but also how they have provided intellectuals with a degree of autonomy that allowed them to address an issue with sensitive political implications.
This article focuses on the construction of a transnational field of literary theories emerging in France in the 1960s and 1970s around structuralism. By surveying the theoretical production taking place around Roland Barthes and Gérard Genette, one observes the emergence of specific instances of theoretical production (conferences, journals, associations) that reflect the way in which this production takes shape within national spaces while at the same time building upon forms of international recognition. The emergence of theories around a national controversy that was immediately located within a transnational space cannot be separated from the internationalized spaces within which the “new criticism” and poetics were deployed, thus outlining transnational trajectories for their main authors. The strategic uses of international spaces (importation, intermediation, circumventing of national disciplines, construction of a literary universal) suggest the amplitude of the international circulations that both produced literary theories and were reflected by them.
If the Church is a corporation, with its rituals of belonging, it can also be envisaged as a field. Within this field, the geography of power is structured according to unevenly distributed forms of capital. Within the dominant stratum of Catholicism, one finds of course the power of the Pope and, more and more often in modern times, the power of the Curia, even though it is only an administration at the service of the Pope. Councils are major events that bring together the bishops of the entire Catholic world and upset this distribution of power for at least two reasons. First, the bishops united in a college become aware of their precedence over the Curia, and discharge their function in a manner that is always specific. Second, to the extent that they act with the assistance of their experts, the bishops implement for the duration of the council new processes of legitimation of the truth. The analysis of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) makes it possible to point out the structuring role of the “field effects” generated by the intellectual clerics within the transnational framework of the council. Finally, this research report raises afresh the issue of the articulation between corporate bodies and fields: in the case under scrutiny, an international corporate identity seems to be the condition for the emergence of a transnational field.
The sociology of morality has often thought of morality in the singular by delivering the exegesis of philosophical or juridical texts. While a quantitative tradition has emerged in the field of the sociology of values and while the sociology of morality has gone through a recent revival, interpretations in terms of social class remain scarce. Yet, material and symbolic inequalities shape the perceptions of fairness and unfairness as well as moral preferences. Like tastes and distastes, moral preferences owe much to the belonging to groups that occupy differentiated positions within the overall social space. By relying on an original statistical survey that bears upon different fields of application of morality, we identify the principles that develop and legitimize the distances between various social groups. We show that the geography of moral standpoints is structured around two sets of oppositions (distance vs proximity to cultural legitimism, principles vs consequences) and that these differentiated moral positions are what makes it possible to understand the conflicts between groups, if not within them. Moral preferences have social foundations, and the analysis of these foundations sheds light on the structure of today's social space, which is characterized by a gradual convergence between cultural and economic elites, and by a fragmentation of the lower middle classes.
