The point of departure of this essay is the growing attention to affect as an important aspect of political participation, particularly in the context of online media's role in democracy and public spheres. The approach pulls together a broad range of research on participation, public spheres and affect, with the aim of highlighting important gains as well as issues and ambiguities. In this cluster of interrelated concerns, we find not a cumulative body of unified knowledge, but rather strands from various traditions. The first section deals with the concept of participation, arguing for a robust view that sees it as an intervention, however small, into power relations. The second section pursues the notion of affect, framing it within the force-field of rationality and emotionality, a problematic motif in democracy theory. The third section focuses on the online environment, particularly social media, highlighting lingering ambivalences of online participation and their relevance for affect. The final section offers brief reflections on affect and populism, and on legitimate public pathways to knowledge.
The Internet in China, between state and public opinion
In twenty years, the rapid modernization of China has involved all sectors of society and economy. The increasing adoption of digital means of processing, transmission and access to information has concerned both work activities and those of free time. In early 2018, the number of Chinese people using the Internet exceeds 772 million, mainly via mobile access (smartphone), and Internet penetration in the country exceeds 55.8%. So far it has been a very unbalanced growth between urban and rural areas, and between administrative regions.Three aspects seem of particular interest: what has the Chinese State done to promote the spread of the Internet; exploiting the potential of the web to support the formation of a public opinion; the instruments of public institutions to control, censor and influence the political and social uses of the Internet.
Cultural Crowdfunding Platforms: between Artist-entrepreneur Figures and Polymorphous Entrepreneurs
The crowdfunding of cultural products and services has grown considerably over the past ten years. Our research, in particular conducted within the framework of an ANR program specifically related to this phenomenon, made it possible to jointly examine the uses of project promoters and individual contributors, and the industrial strategies of platforms. Starting from the notion of "the artist as a worker", we analyze the injunctions to collaboration and the versatility required of project leaders (organization, logistics, budget management, communication and marketing). This figure of the artist participates in a more general reconfiguration of work, emblematic of qualities required in contemporary capitalism. At the same time, we question the position of managers of intermediation platforms as polymorphous entrepreneurs, at the crossroads of actors and sometimes contradictory logics that these actors have for mission to synthesize in order to coordinate the production (and extraction) of value.
The tension between research practice and scientific integrity: the example of bibliographic activityAcademics' bibliographic activity ranges from the constitution of scholarly culture in preparation for research to the contribution of scientific knowledge through publications. Our research questions the link between scientific integrity and the constituents of scientific production. It provides understanding of researchers' knowledge of scientific integrity and shows the tension between the induced prescribed activity, and the actual practices of reading and quoting often determined by evaluation standards. It also points to the gap between scientific publication evaluation standards and values of scientific integrity displayed in research.
Communicational approach to the relationship between arts and sciences: the case of residencies and festivalsThe research proposes to analyze the “arts-sciences” residences and the festivals in a communicational perspective. Since 2000's, those events are organized by artistic and scientist institutions, but also by associations of scientific culture. They receive public assistance, from local authorities to international organizations. The thesis questions the action of strategies of political and social actors on the construction of “arts-sciences” practice and the communication of their products. The emergence of the “arts-sciences” projects is linked to issues concerning territorial development, scientific communication, technological innovation, renewal of scientific popularization and artistic avant-gardism. The communication of the products is torn between the distribution of works of art, the transfer of scientific culture and the promotion of technologies.
The cultural mission of public television from 1993 to 2017: a semiological approach
In this article, we present the results of our research on the France Télévisions's cultural agenda. The aim is to identify the means by which France Télévisions produces coherence in terms of cultural experiences. A chronological analysis follows three parts, mainly inscribed in a semiological perspective, which associate an analysis of the communication of public institutions, a semiology of television broadcasts and digital writing. Public television culture is conveyed thanks to an understanding of culture close to the "established culture", the productions of cultural industries and "mediacultures", although it tends to expand in relation to digital experiences. The combination of a number of factors produces a synoptic vision of the different conceptions of public television culture.
