Tardi is not only a well-known author of comic strip books, he is also an illustrator of novels, notably Louis-Ferdinand Céline's. This study aims at pointing out the differences in the text-image relationships in certain artworks, according to the period and to the collaborations, in order to get a closer view of the success (fluidity, finesse, dynamism, reader's stimulation) achieved by Tardi's elaborated mode of dissemination and functionality of the images invented and placed in Céline's unabridged text (Journey to the end of the night).
The four volumes of Le Cri du peuple by Tardy show Paris during the Commune and feature a number of historical events, from the Proclamation of March 18th to the “Bloody week”, at the end of May. Moments of a violent history, engraved in a stone setting, faithful to the point of photographic obsession to the real Paris. A popular novel, even a melodrama, woven on the tragic framework of events. It is a graphic series about the Commune, as much as about Paris – a dated Paris but also an eternal Paris, this eternity of the 19th century which Tardi seems to be so fond of.
Can we re-read Le Cri du peuple, a fictional comic strip story, as an essay of graphic history ? Although Tardi kept a libertarian empathy with the Commune, he also worked as a historian of the sensitive world, supported by a brilliant mastering of sources, reproducing the representations, the customs and the scenery of Paris in 1871 with talent and accuracy. His peculiar touch efficiently conveys the frenzy of the “Bloody week”. That artwork is also an invitation to question ourselves on the different methods of writing history : Tardi associates in a conclusive manner the modernity of comic strip books with the codes of historical writing particular to the first half of the 19th century.
Noting the haunting presence of the Great War in Jacques Tardi's comic strip books, this article studies the genesis of his work in order to highlight the initial intermingling between subject and medium of expression, and, thus, leads us to a better understanding of the stakes of his work. From his early books to Putain de guerre ! (2008-2009), the subject of World War I – a real food for thought – imposed itself and evolved under his pen and quill, conveying a history of the conflict vacillating between documentary account and imaginary reconstruction, built from both his own family history and his libertarian ideological orientation.
Whether realistic or fantastic, Jacques Tardi's stories invariably feature a large number of “freaks”. Strange creatures – animated statues, prehistoric animals, deformed Humans, real demons… – haunt his production. What does this constancy reveal ? An obvious penchant for the representation of the bizarre, of course, but also a general atmosphere of anxiety of Man faced with his miserable condition and the horrors of History. This article goes through the complete works of Tardi to collect and analyse this monstrous din.

After having remained more or less silent on the subject, a significant number of Italian directors now turn their attention to the seventies. Considering this new production, we focus on the specific evolution of the “terrorist” as a film character. In twenty years, it indeed shifts from an undefined, invisible, character, hidden in the crowd, to a highly individualized person who has to be understood from a psychological or criminological point of view. We can thus see the renewal of Italian films on the seventies as an attempt to fill the blanks of an incomplete historical work, and, most of all, to heal the still open wounds of the “anni di piombo”. Movies draw a picture of an Italian past where people can agree on a common vision of themselves. This pacifying goal shows a new use of cinema : marking and assigning its limits to an unsolved historical violence.
Among the films that portray political violence and the extremist revolutionary groups of the Italian Seventies, Buongiorno, notte, by Marco Bellocchio (2003) stands out. The director chooses to make a film about one of the most dramatic and emblematic period of the decade known as “anni di piombo” (years of lead), but, unlike other directors, he does so without resorting to spectacular violence or conspiracy theories. The film actually focuses on a huis-clos, and follows the very intimacy of its protagonist, Chiara, and her half real/half imaginary relationship to her prisoner Aldo Moro. However, it's through this reconstruction of subjectivity, and even infidelity to historical facts, that Bellocchio succeeds in doing what no film had done before : approaching the historical causes that can explain the birth of political violence in Italy (communism, the tragedies of fascism, and survival of a « betrayed » resistance). One of the formal processes that best exemplifies this approach is the quotation, or the insertions of images from other films, which represent Chiara's dreams and daydreams. This article intends to analyze the sequences in which these heterogeneous images appear, in order to make out the political sense of the film, between evocation of the past and a present – yet necessarily retrospective – vision.

The Spanish painter Francisco de Goya y Lucientes and the American writer Ernest Hemingway are without a doubt two of the most famous aficionados. The former marked the history of the artistic representation of the art of bullfighting, particularly with his series of engravings entitled Tauromaquia published in 1816. The latter is the author of a story published in 1932, Death in the afternoon, essential to anyone interested in bullfighting. The aim of this brief study is to show that, despite pertaining to different times and media, both men tend to propose an analogue approach to the corrida, both in the aesthetic and ethical aspect. It also aims at understanding how, a century later, Ernest Hemingway was able to see himself in Goya's heritage and draw from it, retaining an echo of the painter within his own conception and representation of the art of bullfighting.

Starting from the study of textbooks, films, comic strips and novels, this article proposes to describe the image given of the prehistoric environment in the second half of the 20th century, an image which is difficult to make out for two reasons : on the one hand, it changes according to the decade and the media considered. On the other hand, the image is blurred since it is filled with antagonistic messages. In spite of these – at best distorting, at worst opaque – filters, this image is rather univocal and its message is clear. The prehistoric environment represents a constant threat. It sets up a multitude of obstacles against our prehistoric ancestors. The intention of such a representation is clear : to show the irresistible force of Man and his undeniable superiority.
