      When Suez narrates Egypt
This paper proposes to question the place of the Suez Canal in the writing of the history of contemporary Egypt and its representations. The canal holds a special place in the history of Egypt: it is both seen as the founding moment of a new Egypt and, at the same time, it is part of the country's long history, with the exchanges since ancient times between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. The history of the canal is inextricably linked to that of Egypt, staged by various speeches and imaginaries in different periods. The narrative of its history, told through writings, artistic or architectural works, nourishes, to the point of confusing, Egypt's national narrative.
When the Canal is Built: Idealizing .Visions and Resistance to Modernity
During the construction of the Suez Canal (1859-1869), many pictures and texts are produced: they ask questions about discourses which commonly present the Suez Canal as useful, rightful and even as an ideal of modernity. Many people acclaim the technical progress brought by the European engineers. The visitors of the construction site are not the travellers who followed Moses' tracks anymore. Immersed in an imaginary where everything is possible and which build itself on artworks and poetical representations about the reunion of two seas, they do not question the position of the Orient, while Occident is delighted to fertilize an “unfruitful” area. But the region offers neither the Orient nor modernity altogether. Painted works and travelogues show the two beams of reactions based on expectations and disappointments. Artists, even those who are chosen by the Universal Company of the Suez Canal, express more than anyone else defiance to modernity and are more sensitive to what is perceived as the immutable Egypt.
A Canal for Laughing. The Construction of Suez as seen by Le charivari
The daily satirical newspaper Le Charivari published under the Second Empire texts and drawings concerning the Suez Canal and the opening ceremonies. Rather supporting Ferdinand de Lesseps, it is frequently critical against Great-Britain and the Ottoman Empire, both of them being for a long time hostile to the digging of the isthmus. But the newspaper happens also to be ironical about the « suezomanie » of Lesseps, and morover, it criticizes during the official festivities of 1869 the French bourgeoisie through the picture of the gergarious and invading tourist. Amédée de Noé, called Cham, is one of the most active drawers regularily working for the Charivari : while reenacting a number of orientalist clichés, he often uses the figure of M. Prudhomme created by Henry Monnier in order to lash the selfishness of those Europeans who, invited by the Khedive Ismail, celebrated the victory of the so-called « wedding » between Orient and Occident.

The Suez Canal or “Egypt's failure” in Nubar Pasha's Memoirs
During the second half of the 19th century, Nubar Pasha played a crucial role in the Egyptian Foreign Affairs, especially when Ismail Pasha charged him with the mission to renegotiate the concession granted by the Viceroy Said to de Lesseps in 1854. In his Memoirs, he violently criticizes the protagonists involved in the construction of the Suez canal and denounces the disastrous consequences of this project: the loss of sovereignty, the forced labor imposed to the peasants, the vicious circle of the debt. Our analysis of this critical vision is based on two parameters underlying the narrative: the “logic of historical facts” that can be resumed, for Nubar, in the drop from independence (during the reigns of Muhammad ‘Ali and Abbas the First) to progressive failure (under Said and Ismail Pasha) because of the canal. And secondly the magnified self-image through which the memorialist depicted himself as the instigator of several beneficial reforms, mainly the reform of the mixed International Courts, a work of justice presented by him as diametrically opposite to the harmful project of de Lesseps.
Representation of the Resistance in the Canal Cities by Ghitani and Abnoudi
If the inauguration of the Suez Canal and the exploits of Lesseps inspire especially the European writers, on the Egyptian side, it is the history shaped by the wars produced by the canal that marks an Egyptian literature placed under the sign of commitment and resistance. The present work is focused on the representations of the Canal by two writers, the novelist Gamal al-Ghitani (1945–2015) and the poet ‘Abd al-Rahmane al-Abnoudi (1938–2015), who were deeply involved in the country's militant history. Having stayed in the Canal cities between 1967 and 1973, they presented testimonies on the life of the Canal in a turbulent history, while giving an example of the double engagement of the writer and the possible marriage between acting and writing.
      The Cinematic Imaginary of Port-Said
This article explores the imaginary of Port-Said in the cinema of the Suez Canal, whose birth and development are closely linked to its history. Three iconic cinematographic fictions of Port-Said illustrate the topos of travel envisaged as a structural dimension of the port city. A journey leading to extraterritoriality, and mediation between subjects, territories and cultures, travel is supported by filmic genres, forms and cinematographic motifs that produce a specific imagination of the city. The study aims to determine the way in which the topos of travel fits into four main figures (seaside, urban, port and warrior) that make up the cinematic imaginary of Port-Said.

Imaginary Suez: The Canal, Capital and Colonial Metaphors
A critical examination of the imaginary generated by the metaphors associated with the Suez Canal unmask contradictions inherent to the discourses of colonialism and capitalism. Four metaphoric fields will be studied. First, the femininity and sexualization which set a masculine colonialism politically dominating a feminine canal in a gender power relation assuming the inferiority of the feminine. Second, monumentality: the biblical proportions of the canal project parallels a discourse about the grandeur of capital. Third, liminality: envisaging the canal as the frontier of Egypt separating Africa from Asia legitimizes the internationalization of the seaway and reinforces colonialism's control of Egypt. Fourth, the canal as a medium of transmission: in the discourse of capitalism, the canal is a seaway which accelerates the global circulation of commodities. It is also envisaged as the vector of technological modernity as well as Enlightenment from Europe to the Orient, thus insuring the cultural hegemony of the West.
Reinvention's Attempts of a Sacred Geography of the Isthmus during the Making of the Suez Canal (1855-1870)Based on the speeches of the involved actors and their reception in a partisan French press, the study shows how, while seeking to reappropriate the Biblical and Christian gesture and to associate it with a technological and commercial enterprise, Ferdinand de Lesseps obtains the approval of the Muslim authorities. He pleads the ease of access to Mecca for pilgrims, deals with the restoration of high places, builds mosques and promotes worship while associating Muslim and Christian dignitaries with the blessings of the works and the festivals of the opening of the canal. However, this company gives birth to a globalized geography of the Isthmus, neither conservatory of the Holy History, nor land of Catholic mission, nor new Eastern Islamic space yet claimed, but zone of political conflitcs.
The forced Labour during the Isthmus Digging: War of Speeches and Novelistic Representation
Ancestral legacy practiced since ancient times, the forced labour played, during the Suez Canal digging, a fundamental role that the canal golden legend – in many ways – tends to minimize, if not to obscure. This pharaonic project that revolutionized the world navigation, retains in fact less the sacrifice of thousands of fellahs mobilized on construction sites than the diplomatic genius of the main actors (Lesseps, Said Pasha, Ismail Pasha, the Canal Company...) praising up the sacred union of the two seas which had just sealed the mythical marriage of East and West. But it is precisely the other side of the coin, namely the forced labor of thousands of Egyptian peasants in very precarious conditions, that we wish to examine. A first detour through history will allow us to understand how, in the context of the Isthmus piercing, the forced labour becomes a controversial stake and gains a large geopolitical width. And this, before dismantling the wheels of a war of speeches that strives to legitimize the forced labour or on the contrary to condemn it in a humanistic drive that does not hide its duplicity. The Turkish note which stipulates, among the conditions for the digging works continuation, the stopping of the unfree labour on the sites, is part of the contemporary propaganda discourse. Finally, we will try to analyze how, in empathy with the sufferings endured by the fellahs, writers like Edmond About in The Fellah (1869) and Erckmann-Chatrian in Memories of a Former Construction Site Director in the SuezIsthmus (1877) have represented this human drama.

Podcasting: From Replay to Creation of Audio Podcasts
Since the 2000s, the broadcast of podcasts on the web has spread internationally. Podcasts can be either an audio or visual programme broadcast on the web or a native audio creation. This diffusion comes from traditional radios, web-radios or even from private companies which broadcast some sort of catalogs through web portals. These podcasts encourage mobile listening, with attention being put on sound quality. They focus on audio contents and their sensitive perceptions in the context of the development of an audio culture.

The Peregrination of an Advertisement: George Sand, La Presse, and the Faïence. An Investigation at the Heart of Mediatic, Literary and Industrial Trades in 1855This article emerges from a relatively uncommon opportunity of research: in a letter addressed to Émile de Girardin, director of the famous newspaper La Presse, George Sand mentions an advertisement she wrote and that she explicitly wishes to publish quickly. On July 5th 1855, the text is published under the title of « Les maïoliques florentines et Giovanni Freppa ». Its outcome is quite incredible, marked by duplications of its publications under various forms during twenty years, thus questioning the genericity and the circulation of mediatic, literary and advertising texts in the 19th century. The initial communicational situation—unveiled by the correspondence between Sand and Girardin—allows to understand the genealogy of the advertisement, but it also offers the opportunity to analyze the complexity of the mediatic gender of this very specific type of advertisement that was the “réclame” in the 19th century. The article studies the transactions that framed this mediatic object, while also taking seriously the object advertised, the faïence, considered as an emblematic object of the commercial and industrial civilization boom of the mid-century.

The Graphic Novel: A Perfect Gateway in the French Publishing
The French graphic novel has developed since the 2000s, to become a recognized editorial genre, exported worldwide and carried by bestsellers like Persepolis or The Arab of the Future. Although the definition of the graphic novel remains difficult to establish, the genre has gradually become established in the comic strip in France and in Europe. This article describes this process resulting from the uncoordinated action of actors belonging to the book industry and the progressive alignment of their sometimes divergent interests. The authors who initiated this process were followed by publishers motivated by the creative dimension of the albums or by the conquest of a new editorial niche. The media, bookshops and libraries have accompanied this movement.

The Subaltern can Dream. Mary Sibande and the Resistance of South African Domestic Worker
In her series of sculptures Long Live the Dead Queen, the artist Mary Sibande represents the women of her family who, as many black South African women, have served white families. If the body of the statues, molded on the body of the artist, seems realistic, their costumes unfold the powerful dreams that allowed the ancestors of Sibande to resist oppression. Proposing a political interpretation of this artistic work in a postcolonial context, the paper takes up the concept of subalternity such as from Antonio Gramsci to Gayatri Spivak, it was developed in critical theory. “Long Live the Dead Queen” captures the “traces of resistance” (Gramsci), the “stifled voices” (Spivak) or the agency of a social group maintained in subordination and on which weighs a presumption of passivity.

« Laughing with À la baïonnette! Quaking in Fear of Bayonets ». Violence(s) and Emotional Contagion in the Satirical Pages of a Winter-Spring Periodical 1915La Baïonnette can be considered as the most emblematic title of the satirical press of the First World War, so much the violence of the drawings corresponds to a wide diffusion, intended for the general public. Founded on January 23th, 1915 by Henri Maigrot, known as “Henriot”, the exact title is, originally, À la Baïonnette !, and remains under this original bill for 23 issues. This newspaper embodies the inception of similar graphic productions in the satirical press. It is as though the national divisions inscribed in the pre-war divergences had to suddenly disappear in a sort of iconic synthesis. This tendency to monumental allegory intensifies during World War One, when the patriotic, physical and symbolic mobilization turns towards the capital—both the point of convergence of recruits and the main target of the surging enemy.
