This article is based upon the results of qualitative research conducted in Mexico focused in Central American migrants in transit. Their passage shows agency, while the place occupied in Mexico testifies the articulation of various reports of domination. From there, the analysis focuses on the tension between sociological interpretations of the figure of the migrant in transit - actor and agent-. This article argues that this polarization may not be appropriate to understand transit migration in Mexico and the migrant as a sociological figure. The article discusses the existence of a conciliation of both figures through a specific path; the data show that they consolidate a moral and spiritual consistency to confront social life itself. This consistency is what differs the individual-migrant from the victim or the actor. As a result, the migrant is constituted as a relational individual capable of take charge of himself affronting the risk and social uncertainty of international migration with three moral values: God, family and work. This characteristic helps understand the migrant at the limits of the two faces of migration.
Due to the exponential increase in violence against migrants, thousands of Central Americans marched illegally through Mexico, as a caravan between October and November 2018; their presence was a warning about the insecurity and the non-respect for their rights. The caravan also posed the dilemma of how to report on this event. The journalist Alberto Pradilla published a series of chronicles on the Guatemalan website Plaza Pública, that served as the basis for writing Caravana (2019). This article discusses the role of the journalist and how to represent migration. The testimony is studied as a source of information as well as the migratory posture of Mexico, which is the main space of the march. In his chronicle, Pradilla reveals a series of paradoxes that allow him to develop a critical discourse, which is essential to approach this subject.
There is no lack of Central American spaces in the comics. Since 1950, this region has appeared in classics and new releases, often as a setting for the adventures of heroes immersed in a tropical forest or in violent cities. It is a space in which telluric aggressiveness would be assimilated to the social situation. Thus, the significant reconstitution made by the authors opens up the analysis of geographical imaginaries and the effects of meaning. Grasping these imaginaries reports a discourse constructed by rhetorical mechanisms and makes it possible to draw up the agency of these images. Questions are raised in relation to exoticism, the image of the other and some historical episodes. The question also touches the graphiation of such geography between landscape (aesthetic mediation) and territory (political mediation). In addition, this space is the object of an imagined geography whose toponymy justifies a juxtaposition of preconceived ideas.
The novel La caída del águila (1920), by Costa Rican writer Carlos Gagini, uses science fiction to imagine and resignify the Central American space at a time when the consequences of World War I and the advance of the U.S. presence in Latin America favor anti-imperialist discourses and the advance of a new Hispanism that encourages intellectuals in the region. The present article analyzes the argumentative structure of Gagini's novel, which bases a particular idea of the Central American union as a space of Creole resistance and heir to the Latin race. This space is constructed in a way that excludes any indigenous claims to propose an alternative force for liberation from U.S. domination based on a white race of European ideals and patriotic consciousness.
This article analyzes Cantos de las guerras preventivas by Costa-Rican author Fernando Contreras Castro, from the point of view of speculative fiction, and recent debates on the Anthropocene, and the question about de the future after the end. It emphasizes particularly on the role of literature in the context of this epistemological turn in the humanities and social sciences.
The purpose of this paper is to reflect –through a panoramic view– the ideological, political and social implications that represents geography (rural or urban). The goal is not to do an author (or authors) study but to highlight the trends in the construction of landscapes to determine what kind of understandings are proposed –at various periods and through different interpretation– about the Central American world.

This essay reflects on the discursive relationship that was established, in several journalistic texts (published in 1987, in the Costa Rican newspaper La Nación), between HIV/AIDS, homosexuals and the city, in order to develop specific forms of biopolitics intervention.
The objective of this article is to analyze Uriel Quesada's novel Mar Caníbal (2016) to understand the representation of homoeroticism from the axis of initiation as a central topic, together with identity as a peripheral theme. It is shown that the characters who assume sexual dissent fluctuate between the dichotomies that make them conceive their desire in a surreptitious way compared to heteronormative discourse; However, this situation will help them create survival strategies that are transformed from the proposed axes: the transition from adolescence to adulthood marked by initiation to sexuality and the emergence of an «abject» identity in the face of socially acceptable
The question about the body has not only taken a central place within philosophy and history of western thought but has also been a cause of reflection in art and literature, from where representations that articulate interwoven relationships (gender, geographical space, ethnicity, social class) continue to be assayed. Far from seeming to be an obsession, going back to the body seems to highlight an unfinished quest. The relationship established by each subject and society with the body deploys its own process, for after all, the body comprises our first territory, which is conformed on the basis of multiple overlaying narratives. Accordingly, the following study analyzes the body-textual proposal of the short stories «Astrid (o de las amistades imposibles)», belonging to the work Impúdicas (o de cuentos que se callan) (2016), by the Costa Rican woman writer Arabella Salaverry (1946). This approach intends to unveil how bodies are configured from a particular geographical space, the Costa Rican Caribbean Coast; how the corporeal becomes a border territory and a textual-writing space; by itself, how their outlines echo a marginal history that exceeds its singularity.
The Guatemalan armed conflict, in its most violent years, is the context of the writing and publication of the poetry book El fin de los mitos y los sueños (1984) by Ana María Rodas. This paper focuses on the aesthetic work of the spaces in Roda´s poetry, in order to analyze the configuration of a female agency in the private and public sphere of that time. We postulate that El fin de los mitos y los sueños constitutes an early reflection on the epochal end of the armed conflict. The book itself, which we consider an iconotext, stands as a place of resistance and shelter amidst loving mourning and institutionalized violence.
The article suggests an analysis of the novel Ita (2018) by the Guatemalan writer Mónica Albizúrez, based on a notion of space as a non- neutral dimension of perception and experience, considered to be in a mutually constitutive relationship with the bodies and the affects that inhabit it, pass through it, create it, endure it.

This work explores the little-known world of the Garifuna nation in Central America. A historical and cultural study aims to answer the following question: to what extent is the Garifuna nation characterized by a strong identity within Central America? Two unpublished interviews with two members of this Afro-Amerindian community provide essential elements for understanding the complexity of the Garifuna nation. We will successively discuss the genesis of mixed Garifuna culture in the Caribbean, the historical events of wars and forced exiles of the Garifuna, the claim to the Garifuna name and the importance of their language.
      • Judicial space and visual memory in the Ixil Trial (Guatemala, 2013) - Rocío Zamora Sauma accès libre avec résumé en anglais
Based on the 2013 trial of Ríos Montt and Rodríguez Sánchez for genocide and crimes against humanity in Guatemala, this article seeks to analyse the relationship between judicial space and visual memory. For this I work mainly with several photographs of Sandra Sebastian published online by Plaza Pública. Extrapolating from this specific case, I explore how the spaces in which oral hearings take place present architectural conditions that impact on the visual memory of the trials, and therefore, on the imaginaries of institutions of justice and their actors. I am interested in analysing this relationship with the concept that Linda Mulcahy has called the « dematerialization » and the rupture of the « unity of the drama of the trial ».
In this article we propose a series of questions – and some tentative answers – about the interrelation between neoliberalism, subjectivity, and narrative in the Central American (and specifically Salvadoran) postwar context. Since the spread of the late Michel Foucault's reflections on neoliberalism as a governmentality and political rationality, many studies have been published that address neoliberalism's capacity of creating a new subjective norm. Neoliberal subjectivity, however, may take different shapes in different contexts. This article proposes the possibility of analyzing such specificities about the process of neoliberalization of minds and bodies through the exploration of literary narratives. Specifically, the article explores the case of urban postwar El Salvador by looking into Baile con serpientes (1996), the second novel published by Horacio Castellanos Moya.

This article in three parts draws from some writings by Michel Foucault (1926–1984) related to space, imaginary, and the symbolic which were written in 1966 and 1967. Basically, this article aims to understand how Foucault's conceptualisation can be useful to seize the social representations and the dynamics of heterotopias such as ephemeral spaces, distant places, and remote locations. Several examples will be provided. The first section aims to highlight Foucault's unique way of conceptualising issues and social problems. Whenever dealing with spaces and places, Foucault investigated spaces and imageries as if they really existed, that is, with an almost tangible, palpable existence. Most of this article derivates from a lesser-known essay titled “Of Other Spaces”, which was taken from a lecture given by Michel Foucault in front of a group of students in architecture, on March 14, 1967. The central portion of this article comments, clarifies, and revisits Foucault's definitions and intuitions about heterotopias. The final remarks will briefly present two recent trends in research, emerging after Foucault's death, in the studying and theorising of spaces that go well beyond architecture, geography or philosophy. The first is Pierre Nora's book Realms of Memory while the other research alluded here is centred on 21st Century concepts such as Place Identity and Senses of Place.
This article explores the links between the travelling painter Johann Moritz Rugendas and the German romanticism of the beginning of the 19th century. Based on the observation that some landscape paintings made in Mexico by the travelling artist show the influence of the German romantic painting, we wonder whether Rugendas could know the work of Caspar David Friedrich and the writings of Carl Gustav Carus, particularly. This hypothesis seems to be plausible if we examine some paintings and if we look at the relationships established by Rugendas between 1828 and 1831, during the stay in Europe that preceded his second trip to Latin America.
In Mexico, national identity has oscillated between the White, Indian and mixed race. These different temporalities lead to an analysis of the role of ethnic factors in the identity process, their consequences on development and the advantages today of a plural social construction. This work, which is part of an analytical perspective, shows how ethnic issues have imposed their dynamics on social and political struggles.
With major environmental warnings, the urban space becomes the witness of “global changes”. Los Angeles palm trees are representatives of the “programmed obsolescence” of environments, near and far, geographical and temporal; palm trees participate to the uniformity and landscape formatting, and to the warmed climate of the planet. During longtime as floral symbol of a tropical paradise, the image of the palm tree on which projected utopian notions of a new world, since it has become a ruin of postmodern times. Figure of globalization, the palm tree is an innocent and agonistic victim of the contemporary world.
Agrarian Reform in Bolivia and Cuba: Capitalism, Revolution and Peasant Organization Agrarian reform processes in Latin America adopted different ways and had distinct scopes, in accordance with the specific characteristics they adopted and the context in which they were implemented. An analysis of the agrarian reforms that took place both in Bolivia and Cuba in the middle of the twentieth century offers a good starting point to illustrate the diversity of possible situations. This means that the implementation processes of the agrarian reforms in both countries depended on the specific geographic area where they occurred and the particular structure of power relations from which they resulted. Understanding the land ownership structure and the orientation of the production, as well as the exploitation of peasantry and some characteristics of the revolution governments in both countries, will allow us to recognize not only the causes of the certain patterns of each process but also their similarities.
The Dominican Republic is a country that has always defined itself as monolingual (and even unilingual), whose spanish langage derives from the southern peninsular variant. Despite the various linguistic enclaves – speaking origin of English and especially French – which have existed and still exist on the territory, Dominican society, and even more so the university environment, tend to refuse to take into account this linguistic richness, thus creating a barrier of stigmatization, both in terms of ethnolinguistics (the African American and guloya communities are very stereotyped) and sociohistoric (the Haitians are always considered as the historic enemies).

This article inquires, throughout the post-apocalyptical novel Plop (2002) from Rafael Pinedo, into the phenomenon of the “Economization” of the existence, the process through which the neoliberal state policies commodifies each and every single spheres of the human life. Is by means of paroxysm and science fiction, that Pinedo succeeds at making perceptible the transformations that, in the nineties decade, modified the social structures of Argentina thereby turning the body, as seen in Plop, into a simple object of exchange.
The text undertakes cinema in the light of the concept of event. This symbolic break establishes the place for new subjectivities. Such an approach distances itself from both a technical determination and a gloss from sociological representations. The challenge is to grasp the displacements of normativities, that is to say expectations and recognition modes, verified by an investigation made by subjects.
