Force, bargaining and gift-giving in prison How do inmates and guards manage to get along together ? The attentive observation of these inescapable face-to-face contacts, along with 300 interviews carried out in seven French penitentiaries, bring to light another type of interaction besides relations based on force and bargaining. This third type of exchange is analyzed in terms of reciprocal gift-giving. Gifts of speech (news, jokes...), toleration for slight breaches, and discreet gestures fit into a special context where clashes and riots are an ever-present threat. This type of interaction can be interpreted in many ways : moral norms, a social contract, a means of pacification and stabilization, the risks of corruption and blackmail... The cycle of giving-accepting-returning a gift is seen in the comparative light of anthropology, interactionism and political philosophy. The major contradictions of the prison guards' work crystallize in this mutual interdependence.
Academic work in secondary schools : From the establishment's discourse to students' experience How do today's high school students experience the academic work they are asked to do ? In a survey conducted in two French secondary schools, the establishments and the students justify their viewpoints through a discourse about «meritocratic justice» and «success through work». But the difficulty, given the lack of stable norms, of assessing their own work leads students to reintroduce the idea of «an equal grade for equal work». This dominant idea brings along many misunderstandings, since there is a contrast between the «work discourse» and the results when grades are posted. Three reasons why this discourse carries weight are examined. It has come along with the development of mass education and its principle of equality : work serves as a weapon for motivating students in a context where pedagogical norms are unsettled given its malleability, the reference to work has many potential uses. Secondly, since work is not defined with reference to flexible criteria, students resort to the criterion of quantity-even more so when they are having difficulty. Work becomes a way to «save» students from the offenses of the academic verdict. Thirdly, by combining the quantity of work provided and the level of success, there are many possibilities for adjusting, positively or negatively, the notion of work.
Regulating and governing organizations : For a sociology of managerial action The sociology of managerial action proposed herein differs from the sociology of organized action based on a principle of autonomy and the sociology of the firm grounded in the principles of participation and trust. Instead, the notion of constraint is placed at the center of analysis. In increasingly decentralized organizations, the question of locally supervising and controlling the principles of governance becomes a key issue. Thus has emerged a contemporary form of governing firms described as «gentle domination». A quite real menace, namely market-related constraints, leads to changing the means of management and the corresponding occupations. Project management is discussed in order to show that certain actors cannot avoid this form of management, which entails the ideas of precariousness and success thanks to a «structuration» by external factors, such as codes of ethics or standardization and certification procedures. This new way of governing organizations both more deeply involves individuals (to the point that it tends to «enlist subjectivities» ) and shifts part of the work of regulation outside the firm.
