The archaeological excavations carried out on the site called Huando B, a U-shaped architectural structure located in the Chancay valley on the central coast of Peru, allowed us to elucidate the constructive nature of an important section of the right arm of the monument. Indeed, the excavations have managed to determine that the «arms» generally perceived as «unitary structures», are in fact the result of a set of aligned buildings, where each one of them would be independent with a proper trajectory both constructively and functionally. This information allowed us to evaluate the construction of spaces and social dynamics in different levels of analysis. In this sense, we propose a «spatial-dual» model of organization, which seeks to integrate «the public and the private» in the «U» shaped architectonic pattern.
The esteem, predilection and veneration of the Inkas towards the color red is a subject that has been widely treated in archaeology and ethnohistory. For example, the geoforms of this color have been chosen as places of worship or wakas and have influenced when choosing certain spaces to build their settlements. The objective of this work is to provide an explanation for this phenomenon and to unravel what aspects underlie the Inka conceptions of Andean spaces and places. Thus, the idea is not to simply repeat that the Inkas had a particular appreciation for the color red, but that, based on different types of archaeological evidence from different parts of the Tawantinsuyu, the aim is to construct a story that gives some kind of answer plausible to this phenomenon.
The analysis of a set of rock engravings is presented by describing their formal aspects, the analysis of its spatial distribution in the area and the relationships between them and the environmental context. These rocks are distributed in a linear axis of circulation that connects two opposing environmental sectors, the mountain and the plain. A pattern based on a binary conception of the environment is recognized, where the carvings are closely linked to the micro-regional transit routes in the west-east direction and vice versa. In this sense, we propose that the rock engravings reflect material-economic and cognitive-mental aspects the culture and its structuring and symbolic organization of the landscape.
  • De iglesias y wak'as.
The Valley of La Paz has been the focus of a diversity of studies, from historiographical researches to being the inspiration for novels and poetry. Its past, as in many regions of the world, is woven between a constant urban transformations, aspect that has not allowed to make visible what the valley hides. In this work we will deal with the visual sensorial relationship that existed between the churches of the city and the sacred wak'as that were venerated by the natives. Through an innovative methodology, and the correlation with historiographic and archaeological data, we were able to identify that the churches, although they were ordered to be built by the Spaniards, were resignificated by the indigenous with clear objectives that we could call «resistance» to the ideological changes.
This paper presents background information on the canal cleaning ceremony and request of rains in Socaire, northern Chile. The intention is to highlight the ritual importance of the mountains and the role that the elements of nature have with the social organization in this community. Different hypotheses about the importance of the sky and the existence of possible ceque lines are discussed, as well as geographic proposals for the location and hierarchy of the tutelary hills of the region. Based comparison with ethnohistorical information from Cuzco and other radial systems of the Andes, we confirm the importance of water and mountains as sacred entities in the Atacameño world, particularly in the months of August, September and October, which coincide with the beginning of the agricultural year, the cleaning of canals and the awakening of the grandparents in Socaire, respectively.
In the territorial limits of the towns of Santa Cruz Acalpixca and San Bartolomé Xicomulco, the place of Tenene en Piedra Larga is located on the mountain of Xochimilco. In front of this place you can see an extensive archaeological site where there is a miniature replica of the landscape with carvings of agricultural terraces, little pools and small channels. From this monolith the solar output is observed on December 21 in the middle of the winter solstice and during March and September, the astronomical equinoxes. In this calendar horizon other important dates are recorded for the indigenous world, such as the beginning of the year, so a very precise calendar of 365 days and another of 260 days can be built and has the potential to allow accounting based on thirteen, novenas, septimas, which is the basis of the ancient calendars and which were applied in the planning of the agricultural and religious activities of the Xochimilca community. Objective: Study how many days the Sun at its exit apparently touches the crater of the Popocatépetl volcano seen from the Long Stone marker. Methodology: Direct observation of the phenomenon from the Piedra Larga monolith from December 13 to 21 (winter solstice). Results: The Sun remains 18 days in the Popocatépetl crater, a multiple of 9, and 7 and 13 were found in the calendrical horizon reading.
This proposal addresses the study of stone engravings and the implementation of gnomon as a technique that specifies precise orientations, solar dates and associations between the motifs recorded in different rocky matrices at a pair of prehispanic archaeological sites in Guanajuato, Mexico during the Epiclassic period of north central Mesoamerica. This perspective attempts to relate the graphic manifestations. It requires an accurate recor, with the optimal weather conditions in order to obtain the required data. The application of the gnomon on the designs seeks to find markers of the temporal space of the past, through the orientations and associations affected between figures or relevant parts of the rock engravings and on specific dates. It is proposed the observation of events related and associated with solar movement are related to conceptions structured by the worldview and though. This approach implies a study of lights and shadows of the sun on fixed archaeological elements and embodied in rocky outcrops or architectural elements.
