- Pour une théorie sociologique de la sécurité sociale dans les sociétés industrielles - Guy Perrin p. 299-324 Guy Perrin : Towards a sociological theory of social security in industrial societies. At the beginning Social Security represented a perfect product of industrial societies whose function, if not structure, was generally approved on an international level, from a doctrinal point of view. So that one could elaborate a general theory which could be applied to most of these societies. The study of the origins of this theory is concerned with the history of public institutions for social protection, European for the most part, in order to reveal an « ideal type », according to a method adapted from Max Weber. It is also concerned with the meaning of social security itself in modern industrial societies. Here the interpretation suggested is based on a typology of the principal systems and a description of their convergent evolution during recent years, under the influence of fundamental tendencies linked to technical progress and economic development. However particularities resulting from the degree of development, social environment and collective values are taken into account. This evolution brings up a certain number of essential questions concerning the future of industrial societies, specially their stratification and organization. These questions are of interest both for scientific researchers and political men.
- L'adoption du tracteur dans une zone de polyculture (l'Ouest du département de l'Aude) - Gaston Lanneau p. 325-347 Gaston Lanneau : The adopting of tractors in a zone of polyculture (the Western part of the Aude department). This study tries to point out some of the mechanisms and consequences of the adoption of tractors. At first, the farmers giving in to psychosocial pressures simply superposed the exterior signs of modernisation and the economic and technical structure. This pseudo-progressist attitude and its poor results compelled the farmers to give up their individualistic methods and gradually to adopt a truly cooperative organization.
- Les religions contemporaines du Japon. Coexistence et conflit - Kiyomi Morioka p. 348-354 Kiyomi Morioka : Religions in Japan : coexistence and conflicts. It is a common thing in Japan to belong to several religions. As far as boudhism and shintoism are concerned, a real division of labour has developed. The situation was made even more complex by the bursting in of christianism and new sects which tend to fill the religious gap left open by the break in traditional solidarities.
- L'application d'un indice de criminalité à Philadelphie et au Canada - Dogan D. Akman, André Normandeau p. 355-366 Dogan D. Akman and André Normandeau : Applying a criminality index to Philadelphia and Canada. This article summarizes the final results of a research carried throughout Canada to test the validity of a new delinquency and criminality index, recently applied by Sellin and Wolfgang in the U.S. This index is based on the attitudes of a given population with regard to certain major criminal acts. Thus a weighted index is proposed in order to give a more accurate picture of the qualitative aspects of criminality. The Canadian results indicate that such an index might make up for the shortcomings of the present criminal statistics. The authors hope that other researchers, in other countries, will undertake similar studies in order to achieve valid international comparisons.
Mathématique et causalité en sociologie
- L'analyse mathématique des faits sociaux de Raymond Boudon - René Bassoul p. 367-368
- Traduction mathématique et vérification de quelques systèmes de relations causales - François-André Isambert p. 369-384 François-André Isambert : Mathematic translation and verification of a few system of causal relations. Causal analysis occupies a central place in Boudon's book : « Mathematical analysis of social facts ». He has tried to define the translation of simple relations in terms of functions, to apply regression analysis to complex structures by using a hypothesis of dissociation of causes and to examine, as a hypothesis, the validity of the verification process of some suggested structures.
- Problèmes d'identification et d'interprétation - Alain Degenne p. 385-388 Alain Degenne : Identification and interpretation problems. The method R. Boudon calls « Dependence analysis » being automatic, this leads us to study the conditions of the model's adjustments to observations. We can note that the model is not adjusted as a whole but that the coefficients of each equation are estimated according to a criteria linked to the equation and so variable from one to another. This means that great precautions should be taken in the interpretation of the analysis' results.
- Les relations causales : problèmes de définition et de vérification - Raymond Boudon p. 389-402 Raymond Boudon : Causal relations, definition and verification problems. What do we mean when we say that two sociological variables are linked by a causal relation and can we verify a causal relation under non experimental conditions, situation characteristic of sociology ? The author takes up a controversy which had already been taken up by Herbert Simon in his work and by Isambert in his article (see above résumé). He shows that the notion of cause may be exactly defined from the notion of implication. But this definition remains theoretical and it is necessary to use operational definitions in its place. Concerning the verification of causal relations the author shows that the use of mathematical tools implies in all cases a certain number of postulats. Consequently one can never make an absolute demonstration of the existence of a causal relation. In the second part, the author examines also the problem of the relation between regression analysis and mathematical models of causal analysis.
