Hérodote a quarante ans. Il appartenait à un témoin de sa naissance, resté depuis un lecteur attentif, d'apporter un témoignage personnel sur ce qui lui est apparu au long des années comme une constante dans l'accomplissement de son double projet initial : réintroduire la réflexion politique dans un champ de savoir qui l'avait répudiée et affirmer l'utilité de la géographie. Née à un moment où la géographie universitaire vivait, incertaine, un brouillage de ses perspectives, la nouvelle revue formée d'une équipe restreinte, sans réels moyens financiers, mais avec le soutien indéfectible de son éditeur d'origine, François Maspero, puis de François Gèze, a gagné son pari : imposer dans le champ des idées une approche géopolitique originale, ne se priver d'aucune thématique, d'aucun domaine d'investigation pour autant qu'ils clarifient les relations de pouvoir dans les territoires et leurs représentations contradictoires, les rivalités entre États, régions, forces militaires, économiques, religieuses, politiques, entre groupes dominants et minorités, au niveau local comme au niveau mondial. Hérodote is 40 years old. It was only fitting that an eyewitness to its birth, who has been a loyal reader ever since, should bear personal testimony to the journal's unrelenting endeavours to accomplish its original, twofold objective : to reintroduce political reflection into a field of learning that had previously rejected it, and to assert the utility of geography. The new journal came into being at a time when the prospects of geography in higher education were unclear. The small team that ran it had very limited financial resources but, thanks to the unwavering support of the original editor François Maspero and his successor François Gèze, their gamble paid off. They successfully imposed an original geopolitical approach and put no limits on the topics they addressed and the areas they investigated, their goal being to clarify regional power relations and the conflicting portrayals of them, and to throw light on the rivalry between states, regions, military, economic, religious and political forces, and dominant and minority groups at local and global level.
