Le baccalauréat E et le mythe du technicien. A partir d'entretiens auprès d'anciens élèves de la section E (mathématiques et technique), et des sections de baccalauréats de technicien ainsi que d'employeurs et de représentants de l'enseignement technique, on essaie de situer les limites de l'espace des possibles professionnels offerts aux bacheliers de la section E. Les détenteurs de ce titre «frontière» s'orientent, en fonction de leurs caractéristiques scolaires et sociales, plutôt vers l'une ou l'autre des positions limites désignées par la notion de technicien, celle de l'ingénieur ou celle de l'ouvrier, sans pouvoir toutefois s'identifier à l'un ou l'autre de ces deux mondes professionnels. 'Baccalauréat E' and the Myth of the Technician. This article is based on a series of interviews with ex-pupils of the 'E' (mathematics and technical studies) section of the baccalaureat and with employers and representatives of technical teaching. It endeavours to situate the limits of the space of the occupational possibles available to those who obtain the 'section E' baccalaureat. The holders of this 'borderline' qualification tend to move, depending on their educational and social characteristics, towards one or the other of the extreme positions designated by the notion of 'technician' — engineer or manual worker — without, however, being able to identify with either of these occupational worlds.
