Les images photographiques du monde du travail sous le Second Empire. Sous le Second Empire la photographie se distingue de la peinture non seulement par la technique mais aussi par la thématique et par les choix formels. Mais la production photographique est loin d'être uniforme ; un hiatus existe en effet entre la multitude des portraits de bourgeois en studio et les photographies assez peu nombreuses du monde du travail qui, lui, n'accède pratiquement pas à ce type de représentation. Cet article étudie donc les différentes pratiques photographiques et les images qui, selon des modes variés, renvoient à l'élément «monde du travail» en vue de mettre à jour un faisceau de relations entre le fonctionnement de chacun de ces actes photographiques et certains des traits formels des images produites. Cette étude s'organise autour de trois grandes séries de pratiques définies selon la place - d'objet apparent, contingent ou réel — que le monde du travail occupe dans les images ; elle renseigne certes sur le monde du travail à l'époque mais aussi sur le fonctionnement de la représentation photographique et sur les forces qui président à l'organisation des formes elles-mêmes. Photographie Images and the World of Work in the Second Empire. In the Second Empire, photography differed from painting not only in its technique but also in its themes and formal choices. But photographie production was far from uniform. There is in fact a hiatus between the multitude of studio portraits of bourgeois and the fairly small number of photographs of the world of work, which hardly ever merits this type of representation. This article studies the various photographic practices and the images which, in accordance with the different styles, refer to the «world of work» element, so as to bring to light a set of relationships between the functioning of each of these photographie acts and some of the formal features of the images produced. This study is organized around three major series of practices defined according to the place which the world of work occupies in the images — as an apparent, contingent or real object. It gives information on the world of work of the time, but also on the functioning of the photographie representation and on the forces governing the organization of the forms themselves.
