	Résumé	La vocation de l'universel. L'étude d'un certain nombre de textes, en particulier de romans de Paul Bourget et de Maurice Barrés, permet de saisir les traits distinctifs d'une figure nouvelle, celle de «l'intellectuel». Les individus initialement désignés par ce terme étaient censés avoir en commun l'appartenance au monde universitaire, une affinité pour l'orientation positiviste et une origine sociale basse. Produite hors du groupe qu'elle désignait, la représentation de «l'intellectuel» associait un style intellectuel jugé vulgaire et des idéaux démo- cratiques. Vu comme un usurpateur prétendant parler au nom de l'universel, «l'intellectuel» a été l'objet d'une disqualification double : intellectuelle (l'universalité n'est rien d'autre que la marque de l'Ecole) et politique (l'universalité dissimule des intérêts catégoriels). 	Résumé anglais	The Vocation of the Universal. Study of a number of texts, particularly novels by Paul Bourget and Maurice Barres, brings to light the distinctive features of a new social figure, that of «the intellectual». The supposed common features of the individuals initially designated by this term were membership of the university world, an affinity with positivist thinking, and low social origin. Produced outside the group it designated, the representation of the «intellectual» combined an intellectual style judged to be vulgar with democratic ideals. The «intellectual» was seen as a usurper presuming to speak in the name of the universal, and so was doubly disqualified : intellectually (universality is nothing other than the stamp of the educational System) and politically (universality masks sectional interests).
