Sur le concept de nation. L'analyse du sentiment «national» (ou de la «conscience de communauté» nationale) est par excellence l'occasion pour la science historique de suivre une démarche comparative qui fournit de nombreux enseignements et, notamment, ceux-ci : la catégorie de «nation», loin d'être universelle, est le résultat d'un long processus culturel et politique qui a consisté à référer la loyauté politique à des entités abstraites (royaume, patrie, Etat) ; une étape capitale de ce processus a été au Moyen-Age l'élaboration d'un discours associant, comme la Gesta Hungarorum étudiée ici, l'argumentation de la théorie politique et la narrativité du mythe des origines et des ancêtres. On the Concept of the Nation. Analysis of «national» feeling (or of the national «sense of community») is the opportunity par excellence for historical science to apply a comparative approach, which yields numerous lessons, in particular the following : the category «nation», far from being universal, is the result of a long cultural and political process which consisted in referring political loyalty to abstract entities (kingdom, fatherland, State) ; a key stage in this process was the development, in the Middle Ages, of a discourse which, like the Gesta Hungarorum studied here, combines the argumentation of political theory with the narrative element of the myth of the origins and of the ancestors.
