Delicate Political and Economie Choices Ahead for Pakistan by Gilbert Etienne In many respects Pakistan is an important pawn on the Asiatic chessboard particularly since the outbreak of war in Afghanistan and the Iran/Irak conflict Its position is also delicate vis-a-vis India On the domestic front in 1985 Pakistan set in motion gradual process of démocratisation which does not always run smoothly In May 1988 the President sacked his Cabinet and dissolved parliament but he has undertaken to hold new elections within 90 days However economy though not without shortcomings has reached respectable level thanks to sustained growth On these three interdependent fronts Pakistan has delicate decisions to make Source : Éditeur (via Persée) |
