Au-delà des nombreux mythes et zones d'ombre qui continuent de l'entourer, l'« Organisation d'Al-Qâ‘ida au pays de deux fleuves » s'est voulue particulièrement emblématique au cours des dernières années des dynamiques plurielles et complexes ayant caractérisé l'évolution du conflit irakien. Tout d'abord, sa structure sociologique a profondément muté, en passant d'un mouvement transversal à un phénomène proprement irakien. Ses transformations ont plus largement reflété les mutations de l'opposition armée. De la lutte contre l'occupant à la politisation accrue de ses rangs, Al-Qâ‘ida en Irak a connu une profonde métamorphose, laquelle pourrait toutefois avoir précipité sa déshérence. Fondé sur plusieurs enquêtes de terrain et une exploitation minutieuse des sources écrites, cet article se propose de remettre en lumière la trajectoire singulière de l'organisation jihâdiste. From hegemonic temptation to decline : al-Qaida in Iraq as a reflection of the metamorphosis of an insurrection (2004-2008)Beyond the numerous myths and mysteries that continue to surround it, the “Organization of Al-Qâ‘ida in the Land of the Two Rivers” has been particularly emblematic of the plural and complex dynamics which have characterized the development of Iraq's conflict over the past years. First of all, Al-Qâ‘ida's sociological structure has fundamentally shifted, from a transversal movement to a more properly Iraqi phenomenon. Its transformations have reflected the wider mutations of the opposition in arms. From the fight against the U.S. occupation to the increased politicization of its ranks, Al-Qâ‘ida in Iraq has experienced a profound metamorphosis, which however could have led to its decline ultimately. Based on several field investigations and a thorough exploitation of written sources, this article proposes to highlight the unique trajectory of the Jihadist organization.
