La Grande-Bretagne s'éloigne-t-elle de l'Europe? par Françoise de la Serre
C'est, paradoxalement, au moment où la conjoncture internationale paraît favoriser l'adhésion de la Grande-Bretagne au Marché commun que se développe outre-Manche un courant d'opposition à cette adhésion. Si la détermination du gouvernement d'obtenir l'ouverture de négociations avec la C.E.E. paraît inchangée, elle suscite au sein des partis politiques, des syndicats, de l'opinion publique, une certaine hostilité fondée pour une large part sur la crainte des charges financières qu'entraînerait l'entrée dans la Communauté. Pour sérieuse que soit cette opposition, elle paraît cependant traduire des préoccupations économiques immédiates plus qu'une opposition fondamentale au principe de l'adhésion dont les avantages politiques, essentiels pour les dirigeants, sont mal perçus par la majorité de l'opinion publique britannique. Is Great Britain drawing away from Europe? by Françoise de la Serre
It is paradoxically at the very moment when the international political context seems to be favorable towards Britain's entry into the Common Market that within Britain a current of opposition to entry is developing. If the government's determination to open negotiations with the E.E.C. appears unchanged, it arouses within the political parties, the unions and public opinion, a certain hostility based to a great extent on the fear of the financial burden entry will bring. Although this opposition is serious it seems nonetheless to translate immediate economic preoccupations rather than a fundamental opposition to the principle of membership - the political advantages of which while they are essential for the leaders are ill-perceived by the greater part of British public opinion.
