Pour trouver leur statut scientifique, les sciences humaines ont cru nécessaire de se détourner de l'histoire et ont affirmé la seule validité de la perspective structuraliste. L'entreprise archéologique de Michel Foucault s'inscrit, au contraire, dans le projet d'une histoire scientifique d'un domaine particulier qu'on nomme généralement celui des idées, de la pensée, de la connaissance. Partant d'une critique sévère des postulats sur lesquels s'appuie l'histoire héritée des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, Michel Foucault propose un mode de description nouveau, - l'archéologie, - fondé sur une théorie du discours comme pratique et du temps historique comme temps construit.

History and archeology. A note on the research by Michel Foucault, by Colette Ysmal
In order to define their scientific status, the humane sciences have thought it necessary to abandon history and asserted that only the structuralist view is valid. The archeological research undertaken by Michel Foucault is part of the project to establish a scientific history of a particular field, usually known as the field of ideas, thought or knowledge. Starting with a harsh criticism of the assumptions underlying the history inherited from the 18th and 19th centuries, Michel Foucault advocates a new method of description - archeology - based on a theory which sees speech as a praxis and historical time as time constructed.
