Résumé anglais The Soviet Union and the SALT: coexistence and strategic parity, by Renata Bournazel The SALT agreements signed in May 1972 represent a fresh stage in the policy of peaceful coexistence which is the basis of the relationship between the USSR and the United States - the only world powers at the present time. For the first time in post-war history, the Soviet Union has strategic parity with the United States as a result of unprecedented military spending, and this new power relationship may perhaps make for a more stable world balance. However, the policy which led to the two agreements on the limitation of offensive and defensive strategic weapons has met with some opposition in the USSR, and while those who backed coexistence carried the day at the Moscow "summit", opposition to this policy has certainly not died. All, therefore, will depend on how the United States and the Soviet Union respect the letter and also the "spirit" of the SALT agreements.
