The end of "one Indochinese war" (1954), by Philippe Devillers
After concluding two agreements in 1946 which established the general framework of their future relations, France and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam went to war with one another as a result of customs difficulties. This war lasted more than seven years. However, whereas what was at stake for the DRVN hardly changed, France's interests altered considerably as success became progressively more doubtful from the military standpoint and more pointless from the political standpoint. The end came when the sides had assessed their common interest in arriving at a compromise rather than allowing the conflict to escalate to a higher level involving the Great Powers.
